I'll try and explain this problem the best I can. Im probably overlooking something very simple, I just cant seem to find the problem. I have a 1978 35hp evinrude with electric start and electric choke. When I try to start the motor, it will only turn over when I push the key in and turn. Simply said, I am having to choke the motor every time I go to crank it. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

its possible that your key switch is not working right.

Hey jmd - I'm looking in my manual at wiring diagram's.There is wiring coming right off the ignition switch to the choke solenoid and choke switch. If you have to push the key in the ignition switch and turn it for it to make the connection right I would say you have a worn out ignition switch.Check all of your connection's , making sure to make a visual inspection ,check for corrosion (apply a dielectric grease to stop corrosion) and give them a little tug cause just a look is not enough.Go best boat parts and download a diagram if you don't have a manual, trace out choke circuit and eliminate each component one at a time.

Re: 1978 35hp evinrude choke.

First of all , thanks for all of the quick responses. I guess I probably left out some important information on my original post. The first thing I replaced when this problem started was the ignition switch. I felt for sure that was the primary cause. After that I went through every wire to check its security and cont. If anyone else has come across this problem, your help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I know there has to be some engine guru's that have seen this before. I think my next option may be to just make it a manual choke, or just wire in a toggle switch and bypass the keyed choke.

I have a '76(im told) 35 hp Evinrude that has both options for using the choke. Mine , when I got it a couple of years ago had the manual set up and it works fine. Even after running it for the first time each day, and using the choke do I need to use it again. Meaning its no big deal to have to pull it once or twice a day.

i believe on that motor there is a 3 postions for the choke, all the way in is off, 1 clik out is automatic, works off control box, all the way out is activated, in case battery is dead. you could just switch it off, when not needed.

yes i have ran leads to the choke solenoid before, with just a push button switch, like an old horn button.
