The weather is nice today so I want to drop the gear case on my 72 evinrude 9.5, # 9222 so I can check/replace the impeller and/or pump. My question is, Do I need to drian the gear oil first? I just put new oil in. I wanted to see if it had water or what not. The way the manual shows, I dont have to unless Im going to get into the gears. Thanks for your help.

Re: Water pump help

You don't need to do anything with the oil or the prop unless you want to test something.

Just put the thing in forward gear, take out the four screws and pull the unit down enough to get to the shift rod connector. You need to take the bottom screw out of the connector, You may want to spread the connector a little with a small screwdriver.

If you find that you don't have enough room to reach the connector, use the shift lever to lower gearcase a little more by moving it to reverse.

Re: Water pump help

As Ezeke said, no need to drain the gear oil or remove the prop while servicing the water pump.

However, I always remove the prop none the less. One, to keep from damaging it should it slip in any way (have seen a perfectly good prop get damaged this way a couple times) and two, to use this time to clean up any old fishing line that may have gotten wrapped around the prop shaft, and to re grease the prop shaft splines.

But again, that is just personal preference and not necessary.

There is one thing though. When the water pump is removed, the driveshaft is free, so you can pull it out and see what the oil looks like when you inspect the driveshaft.

Of course, If you place the unit horizontally without the driveshaft, the gear oil will run out.

Re: Water pump help

Ok, very easy. 7/16 socket and a flat head screwdriver. The lower is off and I inspected the water pump. Good thing! the impeller is shot, the housing has groves in it and the lower plate is worn. I think is all from 1972. It didnt look like its been opened up before. One thing though, it did smell a bit like exaughst. Is that normal?
Is there somewhere that I can buy the whole waterpump/kit, housing and all?
Thanks

Re: Water pump help

You will need to get that from a OMC/BRP dealer, on or off line - part number 0382296. I would check with local guys first and save the shipping cost.
