Hi all! I have to put in a new Starter. 2001 VP I/O, 4.3 GL.

My question is: Looks a little dry and rusty on the flywheel. Should I shoot some wd-40 or anything in there? Also, any general tips before I install the new Starter?

Thanks,
David

Dry is good. ;) "Rusty" is normal - depending upon how much rust. WD40 or anything else isn't necessary.

By the way - welcome to Iboats! :)

Take and inspection mirror and look round underneath to see where the bolts are that hold the starter to the engine. It's not a hard job if you can gain access to the bolts. The only hard part is holding up the starter, while you try to get the bolt threads started in the block. You probably could tie a rope around it and have someone hold it up, while you manuver it into place and get the bolts started, I was able to do the starter on my old OMC by just holding it up and starting the bolts, depends on how long your arm muscles hold out!

Its a good idea to get new bolts too.If you use the old ones expect them to work loose and do some damage to the starter gear or or ring gear.

If you do decide to use new bolts, be sure to use bolts specifically for a starter. They have a knurled shaft to keep things nice and tight and lined up. The thread pitch, etc will work with any old bolt... so be sure to use the right ones.
