OMC 115 Turbojet needs help

I have a 1994 sunbird sizzler w/OMC 115 Turbojet. This is my first boat so I'm not sure about a lot of things! The main problem I'm having is at slow speeds I hear a metalic rattle from the jet drive. At higher speeds it goes away. If the boat is running in neutral and you try to shif it in to drive it stalls, unless you do it really fast. I know the CDI box is bad, it has one coil not firing. The new CDI is on it's way. I'm planning to take it out of storage soon and remove the jet drive to see if I can find any loose parts. I've been an auto mechanic for a long time, so I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to rebuild it, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows of a good place to buy parts for this boat, it would be nice to know. Thanks for the help.

Re: OMC 115 Turbojet needs help

The 115 Turbojets keep winding up in the ouboard section because the engine is crossflow V4, but otherwise it is not anything like an outboard. That being said, you will absolutely need to get a factory service manual to work on the motor very much. They are usually on Ebay a few times a month and of course available from dealers.

The Turbojet parts diagrams on the BRP website are very complete, and you can download them and the parts lists: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

The crossflows will usually stall if one are more cylinders are not working when subjected to the load from a jet drive. You should not run it that way anyway.

If you take the time to do a good compression test, it will help you to get some good advice from this forum. Do the test with a screw in tester and all of the spark plugs removed.

Re: OMC 115 Turbojet needs help

Thanks for the advice. I do have a shop manual for this boat, and I did a compression test on it last year when I first got it. I don't remember what the results were, but I thought it tested ok. I'll bring it up to the shop soon and test it again. This probably sounds stupid but what do you mean by cross flow? My guess would be that the carb's all flow in to a common chamber. Is that even close? I have'nt worked on a lot of 2 stroke engines, so I apoligize for ignorance. Also is there some place I should introduce myself for this fourm? Thanks again.

Re: OMC 115 Turbojet needs help

A lot of the 1994 turbojets were installed with a flush side mount control that has a button in the center, which when pushed in allows you to override the neutral start and start the engine at a higher RPM. That will allow you to get in forward more easily.

It is hard to tell where the sound might be coming from, but the impellers can get dinged pretty easily from small rocks and then tap the sides of the housing, so maybe that's what you hear.

There are two types of two stroke outboard engines in the OMC lineup, the cross scavenged and the loop scavenged, both types of engine have been around for a long time. There are not many configurations that used the crossflow V4 as an inboard engine because it needs to be mounted vertically, not horizontally. That doesn't have anything to do with crosflow design, though. Here's a link that will help you with the differences in the designs, just drop the quotation marks when you copy it to your browser:
