While I was off work, my company called in an outside reputable contractor to get the heat working on a commercial HVAC unit. This unit is a bit over 20 years old and considered to be obsolete.

Within 3 years ago, I put new condensor coils, 2 new compressors, condenser fan motors, and a new heat exchanger in it. So basically it has been rebuilt.

The problem with this unit is that there isn't any available schematics. So their tech kept calling me all last week on what to do. I told him that the old style circuit board needed to be taken out and the unit completely re-wired. He worked for 5 days on it and never got it to light off. Friday he called and said he had everything working, but the spark on the ignitor wasn't strong enough to make it light off. He said that it should have the original manufactures ignition module put on it. Cost of nearly $350! The replacement that is compatable is only $189.

Monday was my first day back at work and my boss wanted me to see if I could get it going. I studied his work for 3 hours and then I got my wire snips out and got rid of all the control wiring. There was a lot of wire to cut out! I carry an extra igntion module and relays on my truck. So I went home monday night and stayed working on a setup that would work on my work bench. I drew up a schematic and headed up to the store today at 1:30 pm. I installed my relays and wired it up with new wire and had it light off before 3 pm. It was real cold, ice everywhere and still had some wiring to finish for the air condition and blower. I'll do that tomorrow and the store will have heat again.

I called the boss and told him that I got it to light off, but won't finish it until tomorrow. Its surpose to be above freezing which will make it a bit more bearable. He said no problem that they have done without heat in the lobby for 2 weeks that they can wait another day. He then told me he got the bill for the job that they couldn't fix,,,,,,,,,,48 hours labor/parts came to $3,000! Yeah, he was PO'd. He said he would pay them for installing a new stat and stat wire (which wasn't necessay that took them 8 hours to run).

I don't consider my self completely knowledgeable on some things, but my boss has lots of confidence in me. I really didn't think I could do it.

This isn't the only thing that was like this. Another company sent someone out to fix one of our grills. 3 days of phone calls, and parts, they finally said it couldn't be fixed. I put in a new ignitor and adjusted the gas/air mixture and it works now.

Now the good news,,,,,,,,,I GOT A RAISE! however it might buy me an extra case of beer a week......It all adds up though..............Sorry for the rant, but how do these places expect to get paid if they can't fix what they were hired to fix?

Sounds like to me that there should have been a $3,000 bonus to go with that raise!

Job well done!

Re: Bad Service

There is a grim satisfaction in fixing something that a supposed expert has screwed up.

Congratulations, SS :)

Re: Bad Service

Thanks guys, I feel bad cause I know the tech that did the work is probably gonna be in big doo doo with his company. I think this was the case of "Its an old unit, time for a new one" sales pitch. We'll deduct the work we already done if you buy new.

Here is a funny thing about this unit. Two years ago, we had a local company install a new unit for the south west cornor of the building. It was installed while I was on vacation (go figure). When I got back and went to check it out,,,,they installed it on the north west corner. So the bad unit is still on the roof with a bad heat exchanger and boths cooling stages burnt (lightning strike). So the company had to come back out, get a crane and change out the one they took off prior that was sitting on the ground. That is the unit that I've been working on. This thing has been taboo.:D

The ole knee sure has been getting a workout on the store ladder............SS

Ah, the "Its all disposable" mindset strikes again. They get paid when y'all install a brand new unit.

Servicing an older unit isn't cost effective - because then they would have to 'know' more than just a few unit types. That means more training per person, more parts in stock, etc.

Absolutely correct with that statement. I am an "old school" mechanical engineer with a shipload of "hands on" experience in the automotive field. We get the new booksmart engineers straight from university in our company these days who actually have no clue whatsoever in a practical setting. I tend to let the headstrong ones sink to the neck before offering some help. They become a lot more humble and ask for help from there on.
Nothing beats hands on experience.

Re: Bad Service

We purchased an LG dishwasher a year and a half ago. It had an error code come up, which my wife called into LG. They said no problem, call this number for service.

After 2 days of trying that number, I googled it. It is some guy working out of his house under 3 or 4 different names.

Called LG back to ask for another number. They gave us another company. The tech showed up a couple of days later and called LG to see what the error code meant. (We told them the error code when placing the call). At any rate, the guy came back after a week and brought an entire motor assembly. He messed around with it for 20 or so minutes, called LG again and told us he was ordering another part.

To make a long story short, we never did get the LG dishwasher fixed and I would not recommend the brand to anyone. Their 'authorized' dealers seem to be anyone who will work for their labor rate.

We are now the proud owners of another brand of dishwasher, purchased from a local dealer with their own service department.
