It won't go into gear, after I put the new prop on. Looks like I am missing a piece maybe. The shaft slides in and out likes its not connecting with something it should be? Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Re: 74' 650 lower unit querstion?

Need more information.... a few Q's:

Did you have the lower unit off the motor?

Why did you change props? ie. Hit somethiing with the old one?

Before you took the old prop off, was it shifting fine?

With the prop removed from the shaft, does it shift fine?

Prop shaft should not move in/out axially very much, as it has a bearing carrier holding it in place. Is it the prop, or the shaft that is moving in/out?

Propellors require thrust washer to be installed in front of them, resting on the tapered shaft surface. Did you install that?

Lower unit is still on.
Changed props cause dad hit something and broke the ear off.
Did't try it before I took the other one off.
I do have the tapered washer that fits before the prop, installed it.
Prop seems to stick out far. I looked inside and it looks like it is split on the inside edges in 2 places and the shaft moves in and out about an inch or so. Neighbor thinks its busted and its time for another one.
Not sure where to get one that old?
Thanks

Prop shaft should not move in/out that much. Sounds like you may have a busted bearing carrier, or even worse a split gear case.

Happen to have any pics of the area just behind the prop, where you say it is "split"?

Finding a used gearcase for that motor is not too difficult, but its a crap shoot in terms of reliability and typically the price may lighten your wallet a bit. Your local eBay or craigslist site might be a good place to look.

Before deciding you need a new case, it will help to figure out what is wrong with that one. Rebuilding it with new bearings/seals, and a new bearing carrier may be an economical option in this instance.

If you have problems posting a pic, feel free to email it to me.

Good luck.

Yup...you're bearing carrier is toast. Hopefully that mark along the outside of the case is just a scrape, and not a crack.

You can take that gearcase to a shop for rebuild. They should be able to replace the bearings, seals, and bearing carrier for you for a reasonable amount. Have them check the prop shaft for straightness, and inspect the gears and shift cam while they are in there.

Good luck.
