OK here is my issue/problem.....Everytime i start my engine on the water i have to engage the fast idle lever to make it turn over ON THE FIRST START; However, if i do not engage the fast idle lever, my motor will start on the second turn of the key....i am a little confused why it is like this????
*note- This is anytime i try to start it COLD/HOT!
So is this ok r what? CAN i just keep doing what i am doing and not have any negative effects on my engine?? Or is this a problem i should look into to try and correct b4 any other problem starts from it..........Help me out guys, thanks...

What is the year, make and model of your engine?

cold you are suppose to use the fast idle lever. what are your idle RPMs, at idle and in gear? you may need to increase your idle speed. 650-750, in gear is good. as asked above year, make and model. new problem or old problem, any recent work done on it??????

Is this the Force Engine?

The fast idle lever is connected to the throttle and spark advance on most applications.

Do you touch the accelerator when you start your car?

Yes, it is a force engine, but i figured since there are soo many ppl on the jhohnson site i could get a reply quicker. And i figred that it was a question that an answer would work on any engine...Anyways, it is a 96 force 75hp, and no work has been done to it, and i do not have a tach. to tell what my rpms are...I bought the mtor used. OOOO and by the way it starts on muffs without engaging the fast idle lever!! But not all the time, but most of the time it want start on first turn of key (ONLY WHEN IN THE WATER)

It starts more easily on the muffs because there is no back pressure on the exhaust system when the motor is not immersed in water. The fast idle lever is there precisely because it is needed sometimes. That said, your motor should start without the fast idle (choke may be needed) at times when the motor isn't particularly cold. You may just need a basic tuneup.

If the fast idle lever wasn't needed, the manufacturer would not have installed one. It is used on cold starts and to clear a flooded engine. Before the days of fuel injected cars you had to step on the gas pedal a little to get a car to go. There is no automatic choke on a carbed outboard. It will not hurt the engine to use the fast idle lever.

The fuel, ignition linkage has to be brought into sync, same as any outboard.

I agree with you, Silvertip but just one minor thought - some carbureted OMC motors do have an automatic choke. My 1972 Johnson 65hp has one, which applies 50% choke when the engine is cold. That said. OMC put out a service bulletin years ago which recommends disconnecting it.

Sorry, don't mean to change the topic here Ifish, but I picked up on something Jay had said. Jay Have you disconnected your auto choke? I don't think mine has ever worked right since I bought the boat last year. Not a problem though. I've always used the manual choke on the motor with no problems with starting cold or hot. Lastly, how do you start your motor cold?
