Ok guys, just bought a completely rebuilt FORCE powerhead. It was over bored, new pistons and rings, new bearings, and new carb. I bought it on ebay for 250 bucks, can you believe it what a steal. Anyway, I only purchased it becuase i know eventually i will need it but the one i am using now is still in decent enough shape. So my question is, how do i store this new powerhead so the pistons dont freeze. Or should i just switch the powerheads now since the one i am using now suffers from low compression, 85 on each cylinder? Thanks for the help.

I'd switch it now before season starts. Do the work now then enjoy the summer worry free! Besides, the low compression may be a sign of failure soon, let alone the power loss and higher fuel consumption. Part out the old powerhead.
If you want to store the new, probably just fog it real good and keep in a dry place, covered.

Re: Rebuilt FORCE Powerhead

85 psi could be getting low on power and troublesome to start

IF, notice the emphasis on IF, that really is the true number.

Guages are NOT the same, retest with another

Or......... don't bother testing at all.

Compression is a diagnostic tool, IF, there's that emphasis again, all cyl's come in very close together then the chances of compression being a problem are not very much a problem. If the engines performance is otherwise fine, that is, it starts good, and has good power, runs up to rated speed under load, then in an older mechanics words,

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!

A quality guage may tell you that your compression is a much higher number, Don't loose any sleep over it. Oil the rebuilt, bag it and tag it, put it away and save it until you really need it.

On the other hand if you ARE experiencing starting problems, and your current motor won't jump the boat onto a plane, won't pull up to rated speed/rpm, then by all means, swap out the powerheads, then as you have time and money go through the old motor oil it down, bag it and tag it and save it for the next time.

It's your call.

Re: Rebuilt FORCE Powerhead

Ok i think ill exchange it out wsith the new one. The head i purchased just was the head, i need to use all the ignition and other components from the old one on the new one. My question is how hard is it to switch them out, do i just unbolt and reinstall the components in the same place as i took them off of. How hard is it to remove the actual head from the unit? I do have the chalmers manual, is this going to help me out significantly. Thanks for the help.

wow..a rebuilt powerhead for 250? heck of a deal...if it is truely a rebuilt PH.. that guy lost some cash on it.........i'd re-check your cyl's with a different checker and then do a decarb....and see where you at with it.....i'm one of the "if it ain't broke..don't fix it" guys.........and maybe.. just maybe one day i'll take my own advice lol
