Starting Fluid Question

I recently aquired a 45HP Chrysler outboard (model: 456H4 year?!) and had trouble getting it started. I went to AutoZone got some "Thrust", sprayed it in the carb and it fired right up. Will this starting fluid damage any components in the carb? The reason I ask is because now when I pump the fuel ball, the bowl over flows and leaks out the front of the carb. This is a recent development. Any comments or suggestions on using starting fluid or why my carb isnt working properly? Thanks

Re: Starting Fluid Question

Howdy, Dave.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Starting fluid is deadly poison to 2 stroke engines, Dave. It has no lubricant in it and it washes oil off the crankcase parts and the cylinder walls. NEVER use it in a 2 stroke. Use premixed fuel only.

I don't think it harms carbs. Your problem sounds like a stuck or jammed float needle.

Re: Starting Fluid Question

Take the carb off and clean it real good and get a rebuild kit 18-7037 here at iboats and rebuild the carb. Would not hurt to rebuild the fuel pump as well part #18- 7806. When you have the carb apart there is a screw just above the choke. You should turn that screw clockwise counting the turns till it lightly seats. Should be around 1.25 to 1.5 turns. Remove that screw and spray carb cleaner in it and verify the tiny holes coming out of the other end of that hole are clean. Use a small wire to help clean out tiny holes. The carb kit will come with parts you dont need. It is a generic kit for multiple carburetors.

Re: Starting Fluid Question

Sorry that was a typo on the model number....456HH. You guys know what year? Thanks for the info! Couple quick question though: What is the difference between Sierra and Mallory carb kits? When pull up the fuel pump kits (18-7806) it says it is for the following models...450 THRU 457HA,HC,HD, i dont think my engine falls into this criteria....or does it? Thanks guys!!

Re: Starting Fluid Question

Motor is from 1976. Fuel pump should look like the following. Cant answer your question about the difference but the sierra you only need the diaphram and the gasket and maybe a bowl strainer. The rest of the stuff in the kits or for other things.

Re: Starting Fluid Question

I absolutely agree with NEVER use starting fluid in a 2 stroke. But my reasoning is a one time startup isn't going to wash out a 2 stroke especially if the carb is functioning at all.But NEVER eliminates the possibility any abuse. No question fluid does wash out fuel mix I've dryed a few fuel soaked plugs with fluid in my days. You do still need to be careful with the fluid as it is highly flameable!
There is no legitimate reason to start a 2 stroke on fluid when fuel mix is safer for the motor. But care must be taken to not cause a fire with careless
use of fuel mix.Fire extinguisher handy!Fuel mix is a quick way to eliminate ignition problems from the hard start equation.Don't feel you have shortened the life of your motor but STOP THAT!

Re: Starting Fluid Question

Thanks guys!! So i pulled the carb off and broke it down to parade rest...need a new gasket where the fuel bowl seats with the carb (not MAJOR issue right now)
soaked/cleaned EVERYTHING! put it back together. Sliced the fuel line and replaced it. Broke down the fuel pump and gave it a good cleaning and reassembled. Had some issues getting it to stay running but finally tweaked it just right and its running like a champ!! I also wen to Walmart and bought an extra paddle...taking it for a test run now!! My fingers are crossed!!
