Anchor lighting requirements

While reviewing the USCG requirements for anchor lighting, I found that "all vessels at anchor must display, forward where it can be best seen, a black ball shape."

Does anyone know specifically what they want? A black ball shape on top of my masthead light?

Anyone know anything about this? I can't find anything in my local marine supply shop.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Anchor lighting requirements

you have to have a white light higher than anything on the boat. that simple. also at anchor, you do not have your bow lights on. bow lights and white light means you are underway.

So you have to keep the light on all night? wouldnt that kill your battery or no?

Re: Anchor lighting requirements

Is your boat 23 feet or more in length?
EXCEPTIONS: If your vessel is less than 23 feet/7 meters in length, then it is not required to display an anchor light or shape unless it is anchored in or near a narrow channel, fairway or anchorage, or where other vessels normally navigate.

you are a fool if you don't leave it on all night. there have been many collisions, because of unlighted anchored boats. and moving boats with no lights on. the new led lights are the best for low power usage.

Thanks for the info.
Yes, John I googled it too.
But the original question is, still not answered, what is the black ball shape they refer to?
The boat is 26.5 ft.
