What are the most common problems you have to deal with on a regular basis as foar as most out boards?

I'm going to start out by saying impellers/ water pump, fouled plugs and dead batteries.

Care to add any to the list?

#1 = Improper starting procedure
#2 = Poor maintenance
#3 = Ignoring the warning buzzer. (e.g. overheat/oil related warnings means the problem exists now, not next week yet people continue on and then can't understand why their engine is junk)

The most common problem I have with my 200HP Ocean Pro is keeping gas in the tank. :D

Other than that I've not really had an issue with it in 1900 hours of use. No dead batteries, no fouled plugs and no water pump problems and I only run in the salt.

Dead batteries and water pumps going bad are not motor problems. They're problems with the maintenance of the motor and the one to blame there is the owner.

Always the carburetors....When the engines are EFI or DFI it's usually a voltage issue.

And uneducated owners who absolutely KNOW what the problem is not when they bring their engines in:)

Yeah, what Kennyfam said. User neglect or abuse, leading to gunked up carbs or blown engines.

Re: Most common problems....

In my experience, most prob's/breakdowns/failures are caused by an unfamiliar/inexperienced operator using it. Often involves badly flooding an engine, not priming the engine, gorilla-man breaking a pull start rope, running over monofilament, hitting rock... one of the more creative ones was on a dual start tiller motor (both electric start and rope), pulling the rope enough to engage the recoil, then remembering the electric start (still holding the rope tight), and then hitting the "start" button... Broke the manual recoil off the top of the motor, and broke the electric starter off the block. Oops, "the engine broke".

Not doing proper winterizing and getting gummed up carbs or a damaging the lower unit is probably up there too.... as is a newbie not adding oil to the gas. Sometimes people think they'll do you a "favor" by filling up the tanks behind your back... you know... like a surprise, to show they're a nice guy. That hasn't happened to me (yet), but I've heard of it.

As you can probably guess, I'm happiest when I'm in control. :)
