Hello together,

I just bought a 1993 boot 2 weeks ago. This is my first experiens
with boats at all. I?m from Germany and really need your help guys.

I read a lot about props, pitches and diameter but I?m not shure if
I understood erveything and if so, where I will get what I need.

First of all, I have no idea where I will get the WOT rpm of my motor.
This might be the first thing I have to know?!
Also, the installed prop is damaged and I?m also not sure if it is the right one for the boat. There are no numbers readable any more.

I have also the Engine and Transom numbers if that will help:

motor 0D820719
transom 0F037995

I had the boat in the lake to test drive it. (600lb of load and full of gas) The speedo showed 35mph (have to verify with GPS) and 4800rpm at WOT....
The boat planed at 3100rpm ( I read, it?s used to plan at 2500rpm?)

For my understandig, I have to get a 19 inch prop with 3 blades? But how will I find what exactly is the right thing, without trying a serveral ones?

Thanks a lot

Dominik

Re: 3.0 Merc in Stingray 18ft

HEy guys, today I had a closer look do the motor. I plan to echange all filters and spark plugs.

Also I realized, that the alternator ripped some of those noise reduction mates of and got the dust everywhere inside the cover.
I checked the carb and found the air filter clogged. Also there is a lot of that stuff inside the carb after I took the filter off.

Is cleaning a carb something which is for an average skilled hands on guy possible?

The air filter is a flash supresser.just be sure its clean.
If it starts good and responds to the throttle leave the carb alone for now.
clean or replace filters and get the propeller repaired at a prop shop. They can also check size. After prop is fixed see if you can get a GPS and take another test run and give us the figures and the prop size. Not sure of max RPM but your surely at least at the max. with the prop size that will make it easier to figure where you are at.Someone should be along with more specific info.

Cleaning that part of the carb is mostly cosmetic. The flash supresser should be cleaned and see if you can straighten any bent louvers. That will probably help you as much as anything so far.
As I suggested get the prop repaired and size checked.I'm betting the good prop will put the rpm at 4600 or 4700 rpm and the speed a little faster.Planing rpm will probably be lower as well.Once you get the max rpm and speed with the repaired prop we can make the decision about the best prop.
I believe that setup should do 40+ mph.Are you using the trim to get best performance?

Ok, I got everything cleaned and will have new spark plugs as well.
I try to go on the lake somewhen on the weekend.
I tried to play with the trim last time. But there was not much room between jumping and to low in the water....

Regarding the prop, will I find any numbers if I take it off of the outdrive?

Thanks

My boat is a little smaller & a little older, but should be pretty similar power. It had a 17P on it when I bought it and over-revved the engine. By switching to the 19P I lost some power taking off, but have been very happy with overall performance.

You may find numbers under the nut.

Ok, I will take the nut of as soon as possible.

Here is a nother question for you. I used elephant ears to start the motor in my driveway. Where is the exaust flow and the cooling watter supose to get out of the boat?

I was thinking, it will come through the prop, but that was not the case. It came out of the outdrive (left and right) just close to the housing which is bolt to the boat.

Is that ok?

Also, I have some issues with the carb. Please see that:

Here is what you need to do. Join Mystingray.com. We are a mostly US based group of Stingray boat owners. All you need to join is you hull ID # stamped into the upper starboard transom area. Their are plenty of people that will have a boat just like yours to help w/ questions and problems. I have a larger V-6 powered Stingray myself, so can't answer prop questions about your boat. The water and exhaust coming through the transom plate on either side of the drive on an Alpha 1 is normal. Good luck and happy boating. How much do you pay for gas over there?

Re: 3.0 Merc in Stingray 18ft

Ok, here is the update froms todays run.

I finally fixed the carb leaking problem and went out to the lake.

I had a stingray hydrofoil on it when I baught it, which I took of before this run.
I also cleaned the boat below the water region.
I cleaned the carb and the air filter.

I did NOT any work on the prop.
I will take it off during this week to verify if there are some numbers under the nut.

Here is what i found out:

The speedo is very accurate. It is 1mph off of the GPS data?s.

The speed at 4800rpm was 39,5mph after I played a litle with trim.
ALSO, the motor does overrev if you allow that. It easaley went up to 5100-5200rpm @wot.

It does plain with 3000rpm@ 22mph and it waqs going to do that in around 5 seconds at the holeshot.

I guess that means, that I have to repair the prop or just get a new one?
I would like to waterski and tube in the summer. I don?t care that much about topspeed and mpg.... From what i read so far, would that mean, I better go with a 4-blade version?

Thanks for your input

Sounds like your close. If you get the prop repaired, signifigantly less than new,and get the size.make a couple of runs give us the specs then we can really get the idea what you need and you can keep the old prop for a spare.
