Merc 115 ignition trigger

The trigger on my '74 1150 isn't working. I have no spark; the switchbox, coils, and wires are fine. Is there any way to repair or fix the trigger? The ring with spaces it in that rotates has grease on it, would that affect it at all? A new trigger is 400+ and I don't want to spend $ unless I have to.

The problem is not the grease it's the cold solder that it was assembled with, there is no fix, you might find a donor engine that would save the disassembly and alot of time.

Fish, You can find a new trigger for $200+ on the web. Poke around a bit. They also have rebuilt triggers for a few $ less.

I also have one from a '73 laying around in typical condition. if you are interested, PM me.

Try this, clean up distributer cap and carbon. Check belt to see if broken. Then turn key on and take a jumper wire from the blk to the brn. Just tap it a few times. I have had this to arc weld internal contacts back together. If it fails, try ebay #120220103562

Re: Merc 115 ignition trigger

well new trigger came in last week. when I went to remove distributor, looks as if i have to remove the flywheel to get the assembly off. there are three vertical bolts holding the distributor on, and I can't see anyway to get to the third one without pulling the wheel. is there another easier way to remove the dissy or will I have to suck it up and buy a flywheel puller?

Re: Merc 115 ignition trigger

That motor has a two piece flywheel. Reomove the eight 5/16 bolts that cluster around the flywheel nut and the outer flywheel will come off. You might mark it's position to make reassembly easier.

ok going good so far got the dissy off the engine, got as far as taking the 3/4 hex nut off the rotor shaft. its really stuck on there. how much torque can i put to get that thing off without breaking the rotor or twisting it on the shaft

ok now im confused. I followed the re-assembly exactly, the dissy went back on fine. however, now the distributor is pushed up against the highspeed stop. the bottom part with the cap doesn't appear to be in the same position as before at idle. did I somehow mess up that spring that goes around the unit or do i just need to readjust cables and etc

Fish, Although all of the trigger housings are the same, the external linkages are a bit different. Make sure you installed the external stuff correctly. If you did, than you need to adjust it to spec.
