Steering On Engine Switch Over

will be putting a 115 HP 1978 mercury on my boat looks to be easier to use existing steering control it connects to a lever off the front of existing engine,,,,,,,,,,would it be ok to remove the mercury rod as it goes the bracket ...and leave an open hole then connect my exist steering cable on the mercury lever where the rod was connected?

I do not understand your question. The '78 Merc has the new style steering rod thru the tilt tube steering. If you are replacing an old Johnnyrude, with a single steering cable and a splashwell mount, you might like to use the new style steering.

yes replacing johnson/rude motor yes, has the splash well mounting and works fine if i can use this why buy another steering system,,,,,,,,, so question is will it work and is there a problem leaving a hole where the mercury rod went thru the tilt tube,,,,, thanks for your suggestions

You can use either setup. Normally if you remove the splashwell clamp from the steering cable, you will see the big nut and threads that fit thru the Merc tilt tube. If so you can change it over for free.

You can also leave it the way it is....

thanks very much,,, i hadnt thought about using what i have thru the mercury tilt tube ths again
