Old Sportwin stalling, then starting

I have a mid-60s Evinrude Sportwin 15 HP. Last summer, I started off, got up to full speed, then light white smoke started to come out and then it stalled. After about 20 minutes, I could get another 10 seconds of running before stalling. I think that the water pump is gone. The mix was appropriate and everything was running fine. Any tips on what it could be and possibilities towards fixing it?
Thanks, C.

Could the white smoke have been steam? Check the water pump and head gasket, sounds like an over heat to me. Rick

That is my thought, but not sure. It did not seem like typical smoke, so could very well be steam. If there is steam, is the head definitely damaged?

First, lets get the motor straight. Evinrude didn't make a 15 hp during the 1960's. The Sportwin is a 10 hp built from 1956-63. I think they may have also put the name on the 9.5 hp from 1964-73, but I don't know for sure.

Could be the water pump. Check compression if you can to make sure the powerhead isn't fried. Replace the water pump and try again. Also, check the coils. If they are original they could be the problem, as well.

The head isn't "definately" damaged. These old motors can usually take an overheat or two before they are toast.

You are right wbeaton. I have a 72 9.5 Sportwin. And as of yesterday, it is running great thanks to the help I got here. Thanks

I think I have been duped. No where that I can find does it actually say that the motor is 15 hp. This motor does look like it is from the 60s and is light blue and white. It does say sportwin on the sides. Was the sportwin ever made with anything other than a 10hp or 9.5hp, earlier or later that the two ranges posted?

Nope, Lightwin, 3 hp; Fleetwin, 7.5 hp; Sportwin, 10 hp; Fastwin, 18 hp; best I can remember anyway.

The 50's vintage 15HP's were Fastwins also, they became the 18 with a new power head in 1958 or so. Rick

If they told you it was a 15 and it's a a Sportwin you got duped. What model# is it? Does it start with a "10"?

You definately have a 1964-73 9.5 hp. Also called the "pancake". It has a large broad fibreglass cowl. Post your model number.
