If it were me I'd bid on a whole new lower unit on ebay. You'd get it cheaper than buying individual parts, and if your clutch dog and gears are good, you have them as "insurance" if the one you get is bad. It's hard to find a good shaft, but I think they're about 65 or 75 dollars at laing's. Their's will be usable, however, you never can tell about the one in the lower unit on ebay. I'd still go with a whole used one on ebay, though. Or better yet, place a free ad on aomci. Those guys will FIX YOU UP!:)
Good luck,
JBJ

Reading between the lines here, do you need a drive shaft and pinion gear because of wear in the bushing right above the pinion? A new shaft and gear will destruct too, if the bushing is worn out. Those parts wear out quickly if it is run with water in the gearcase.

I think it is cast into the housing--not removeable

I have a '58 10 hp LU on my bench right now with that bushing shot (actually I think 2 of them!). Yep, you need a new LU housing. I have heard that a machine shop can change it but it costs a fortune. Too bad. And that pinion gear is worth around $130 at the dealer. Get a used LU is your best bet. Also as an FYI, the LU in 58 is a lot wimpier than the 57's and earlier and tended to be a crappy LU.
