Broken Rod Water Pump Pulley

The shaft that connects the pulley to the water circulating pump on my '99 merc 4.3 broke off with the pulley attached. I don't know if it is related but that same day my steering became stiffer and stiffer. I went to check the steering fluid today and start trouble shooting for steering problems and thats when I noticed the belt off and the pulley missing/broken. I think it happened when I flushed the lower unit, luckily not while I was underway.
I am assuming I need to pull out my water pump and replace the rod but any ideas why this may have happened?

Welcome to iboats.....:)
The actual shaft on the engine circulating pump broke off?.....
You need to replace the entire pump.....
If pump was an automotive pump, that could explain it....
or over tightened belts or a defective part.....;)

Re: Broken Rod Water Pump Pulley

Thanks for the info. This forum is great for novice mechanics like myself! Yes, the shaft with the pulley connected to it snapped off at the point where the shaft enters the engine water circulating pump.
Do you think I can I purchase a pump kit or do I need to buy an entire new pump?
