Grant,

First you need to disconnect the link arm from the end of the steering cable. The link arm is that curved piece with a hole in the other end that is bolted to that black tab in the front. Undo the bolt on the underside of the far end the cable over where your shift/throttle cables enter the motor. Then remove the bolt in the middle and completely remove the link arm.

The next step may get a little tricky because you will probably have very little play in the steering cable to push it back into the boat. First you will need to loosen that nut that is on the stbd side of the steering tube (the one front and center in pic 2.) You will need to pull the end of the cable thru the steering tube. Like I said your cable probably wont retract inward far enough to get it completely out of the tube. What you have to do is lift the motor out carefully and angle it slightly and slowly pull the motor away from the cable. You will need to repeat this process when you reinstall. You may need to grease the end of the cable as those things can get mighty difficult to get all the way out (depends on how much gunk is in the tube.

An engine hoist from a rental place is good for this because they are on wheels. That motor is more than likely much to heavy to manhandle off of there while trying to wriggle that cable loose. You may need to get a lift eyelet that attaches to the flywheel to hoist the engine up.

Thanks Triad,

All I really need to do is turn the motor enough to remove & replace the bolt holding the trim motor on the inside of the transom bracket.
Can I turn the motor a few degrees to one side without damaging the steering cable?

Well, I got the outboard motor off the transom, turned it "very carefully" and got the 2 bolts out of the pump motor housing.
Now I am having trouble taking the housing off the pump. I've tried prying it carefully, and tapped it with a hammer and a block of wood. It's still not budging.
Is the drive shaft of the pump motor pressed into something?
