I have just purchased my 1st outboard motor (1947 - 1951 Evinrude Sportwin 3.3HP) and have a few questions about the fuel mixture.


1. Do I use 24:1 / 32:1 / 50:1?

2. Should I use synthetic and what weight?

3. How do I measure the mixture? i.e. how much oil per gallon?

mixture prior to 1950 is 16-1 use tc-w3 outboard motor oil. this is the easiest way to mix.

I have read that the lower the ratio the more smoke it could produce. Is this correct? And if so, and I do begin to smoke quit a bit, what is the highest ration you would recommend? Thanks in advance!

In 1964 OMC changed the spec for all OMC engines built before 1964 to 24:1 using TC-W outboard oil. That included engines that had been spec at 16:1 with 30W non-detergent motor oil.

I run my 1948 Gale/Sea King on 24:1 with TC-W3.

Running your li'l jewel on 16:1 would do no harm, but using 24:1 it will smoke less. Using full synthetic at 24:1 will smoke even less than that.
