I have 97 120hp force with a regular longshaft (20"). I need an extra longshaft (25").
Did force ever make a 25" shaft? Is there an extension I can buy. And/or will a merc foot fit on my power head?

Thanks
Bill

If you look on ebay they have some lower units that claim to be 25" units. Also I have been looking for a new lower unit for my 20" motor 1996 force 120hp and guys have been asking me if i have a 20 or 25 shaft. One guy even said he has an extension kit to make a 20" a 25".

Good luck!

Trayscool, who might this "guy" be? Would you mind sharing his contact info?

Thanks

Re: Is there an XL shaft for 97 120?

Most of the older Force engines I have seen with 25 inch shafts had the midleg longer. Don't know about the later 90s but I would be willing to suspect the same. None has a 5 inch extension. I even have an early 80s Chrysler with a 25 inch midleg. If they were going to go to the trouble of building a long shaft midleg, why would they offer an extension?

This doesn't mean that they are not available aftermarket but I doubt that Merc made them. You would still need to get a longer drive shaft (disassemble the lower unit to install) and water supply tube.

My recommendation would be to invest a few dollars more and buy a jackplate instead. That way you would have much more versatility in mounting position of the engine. Plus, the engine hood will be 5 inches lower for better rear visibility and less noise in the boat. And the engine will be sitting no lower than it would on a 20 inch transom. You may need to play with the steering set-up though.

The setback of the jackplate will also give a little more leverage and bow lift. It may result in more speed than a regularly mounted engine.

All told, I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Thanks guys. Jackplate may be the way to go.
I have an outboard plate on the boat now, but to relocate it would be a lot of work, and then if done wrong, well you know ...

Everything works ok for now. But I can't get to a great trim position. Good thing I have a NFB steering system cause there is no way I would want to fight this on long runs. She's decent in a straight line, trimmed low. But she'll cavitate on agressive turns.

Thanks. More feedback welcome of course.
