I am new to boating and just bought an 1989 cobalt 19BR w/ 4.3L and alpha one drive and was wondering if I am supposed to strap the drive from moving during transport or just leave it??? The previous owner said it was ok to leave it was wondering your thoughts here??? I know it's probably a stupid question but like I said i'm a newbie.

Thanks in advace guys

Nice...I didn't know they made such a thing. So I shouldn't be worried about it moving from side to side when hitting bumps??

thanks...I'll need to get a pair of those

Some people strap the unit so it can't move side to side. Some type of outdrive support is also used, either the snap on ones mentioned above, or the type of units that attaches to the trailer. If you use the type that attaches to the trailer you also limit the side to side movement.

I used to use those sleeves, but I could pop them out by running my trim down, so what's the point? The only real concern is if you have a hydraulic line failure. I do NOT worry about the transom at all. There is way more stress on the transom by delivering 200ish horsepower at a moments notice than a little bouncing causes. I would just insure that your hydraulic lines are tight and rock on. My .02 . . .

I have had those sleeves for years on multiple boats and have never had them pop off.

Have you driven your trim down against them hard? ^^^^ Might have just been the ones I used, but I could make them come off . . .

Sounds like we're talking two different things here, vertical and horizontal movement. I run a bungee through the steering wheel to stop the side to side. I use a transom saver and the factory limit bracket to support the up and down movement.

Yeah I might have to look at those transom savers also...They look like they might work real well but I'd hav to make sure it would reach the back bar of my trailer. But then i would have to either relocate or remove my center (three light bar) on the back of my trailer.

As far as the bugee cord goes with power steering will that still work?? Or should i even worry about it....seems like some aren't concerned about the side to side movement?

Thanks for all of your help

I use these. Drilled two holes in the center on the outside edges on each clip for small bungee cords from clip to clip. Haven't had a problem of them popping out so far.

Many folks I see, use nothing on I/Os. It is more important with O/Bs, but I believe in taking as much stress of of the transom as possible when trailering. I use them on both. You can mount a roller bracket up-side down under your light bar for the trailer attach point.

On my boat, the previous owner made sleeves out of 1 1/4" ID gray PVC pipe. They are cut to the length of extended cylinders with a slot cut down the length. They clip right on and stay secure. I had them on all the way home from CO to IL and they worked great. If you want I can take pictures and post if needed.:)

If you don't mind that'd be great...it'd give me a good visual to start with...also how thick of walled tubing did they use??

Thanks,
