Hello everyone,
As you know I just got threw cleaning, soaking, blowing compressed air threw the jets at around 100 psi and even put copper wire 3 strands twisted together from an old extension cord threw the jets and I think I did it right becuase the motor ran great on the muffs after I rebuilt them. Anyway, my friend told me that it isn't a good ideal to soak the alumunim carb body in the Gunk, 1 gallon paint can with basket, carburetor and parts cleaner becuase it could mess up the aluminum surface and cause issues. Have you guys heard of this before? I soaked my carbs for about a good 24 hours before I rebuilt them. I am hoping I didn't screw my carbs up but I think I didn't becuase the motor seemed to run great on the muffs last weekend. Thanks, Bob:redface:

Bob..... Having soaked two or three of those carburetors since 1961 and never encountering any problems of that nature, I'd suggest that you not be concerned about that remote possibility.

When you actually see gasoline flow directly thru any portion of that aluminum, let me know where you're at as I'd certainly want to see that (grin).

what does the Gunk label say about aluminium? I've had mine in B-12 for days, that stuff will take the white off rice.

Guys this is not an old myth.

Carb soak chemicals, depending on the brand, can remove the protective anodizing done to the carb by the manufacturer. There is a difference in brand, some are more 'aggressive' than others.

Once this anodizing is damaged then the base aluminum will oxidize, externally it is not a problem, inside the float bowls and passages it becomes a problem due to the alcohol/water content of todays fuels.

Well? What brand's should one stay away from, or better yet which brands will not do this.
Or which ingredient is the culprit?
Thanks

Charlie..... Yes, I've heard of that quite a few times in my career. but it's something that I have yet to encounter...... in the automotive or outboard field.

Hello to everyone,
So, am I all right using the name brand GUNK carb and parts cleaner? Hopefully I didn't ruin my carbs but after I rebuilt the carbs I ran the motor with the muffs in my drive way and she seemed to run great without any hiccups. Let me know becuase I am curious. Thanks again, Bob:redface:

hard to imagine a product labeled "carb cleaner" causing corrosion and continuing as a viable product, but I guess stranger things have happened.

I guess you'll find out next time you open 'em up.........let us know the outcome. ;)

Most carb parts are die cast zinc, not aluminum. I do not believe they are anodized. I have been using carb cleaner for years, even before the environmentally friendly stuff available today and never ate up the parts. Rick
