I just bought my first boat, a 16 foot with a 1983 70 hp Evinrude outboard. We put it in the water used it for a day it was fine. It took a second to start but we got it going and then the rest of the day it was fine. Got up the next day to go for a quick spin and it would not start. I took the hood off and it looks like the starter is stuck and is not going back down. All it does when we try to start it is turn very slowly and then stop. The little gear on top of the starter is always in contact with the motor head even when not trying to start it. This is not how it looked when we bought it. I do not know much at all about motors and was wondering if I am going to need to replace the starter or if there is something easier that I could try.

thanks FR, just to clarify the starter in that pic is stuck down ours is stuck up is that pretty much the same thing or am I looking at a more serious problem. THe guy that sold it to us told us he just put a new battery in when we bought it. The battery looks new but who knows will test the battery.

Same thing. If your motor had started on the last attempt it would have kicked the bendix gear down.
