I have another dumb question. I have been told this boat should have a fuel separator on it. It is a 1982 Mercruiser 470 I\O. Can anyone tell me what it looks like and where it is located? Also, I had asked this before, I have the fuel filter out, when the engine cranks should'nt fuel come out? I get nothing.

Thank you

Jim

If you sent a picture it would be much easier for us to tell you which is the fuel filter. But as Haut Medoc told you it's a can like the oil filter usually white color and if you follow the output from the tank it's impossible not to find it.usually it's called water seperator and inside it there is the fuel filter for fuel dirt.if you loosen it it's normal not to see any fuel coming out because at that moment the pump sucks only air

470's didn't have water seperating fuel filters. Only the V6 and V8 engines.

Thanks guys, Yes there is not one as I followed the lines. Would the fuel pump still pump fuel with the filter out? Have the feeling the diaphram is bad. It has a site hose but it is so dirty and worn you cannot see if fuel is inside it.

Assuming you mean taking the element out of the filter and putting the bowl back on, yes it should pump. Only IF there if fuel getting to the pump.
Hook up a remote (aka outboard gas tank) directly to the fuel pump and see if it gets gas and runs.
