I sanded my 5hp Johnson hood, primed, painted with Evinrude Johnson Warm Winter spray paint and let it cure for 2 days in 60 degrees. When I sprayed the clear coat it wrinkled some places before I was done spraying. Do you think the paint wasn't cured enough causing it to debond? Some areas are fine but probably 40-50% has wrinkled.
I doubt there's anything I can do but start over.

not all clear coats are compatible with all paints. Some will do just as you said. Make sure you have a clear coat that is compatible. If you are using auto paint there is no need to wait days to spray the clear coat. You can usually do it in a few minutes. Read the directions on the paint and clear coat.

I'm not a pianter, but I've been doing some reading lately since I have some motors I'd like to piant and I understand that too long of a cure will also cause this problem. It seems that clear coat designed for the paint used should be applied before the paint is completely dry or you get wrinkling.

Do you think I can sand the wrinkled areas smooth, rough up the rest and paint it again followed with the clear coat? I would like to avoid stripping it again.

If its just the clear coat you can sand it down and then reapply another coat of clear coat.

I think the paint has wrinkled, not just the clear coat.

The paint will wrinkle. Are you using the Tempo paints?
The clear coat is best if you buy the same brand and type as the paint.
I had the same problem before then switched to Tempo engine paint and Tempo clear coat.It done very well.
All you can do is sand it all smooth, light coats of paint then the clear.
Some paints have a flash time on the directions that tells you how long to wait between coats.
Thats a bummer,i know how you feel..:(

Re: Clear coat wrinkled hood paint

I used Evinrude/Johnson paint and clear coat from our local Canadian Tire store. I sprayed a bit of clear on the bottom of the handle tonight and it started to wrinkle too. I know the paint has cured well on the handle. I'm going to paint the handle again then follow with the clear coat and see what happens before attempting the hood again. I'm kicking myself for not testing it on the handle the first time. I intended to but I too excited to see what the hood would look like now I'm sanding it twice. I saved the decals so I'm working around them too.
This is somewhat of an experiment before I repaint the 75hp Evinrude in my avatar.

throw away that clear coat and see if your John-Rude dealer has the matching clear.it sounds like you are using two different types of spray paints.;)

You guys are absolutley right. Even after the paint had cured for several days the clear coat wrinkled the paint. I was able to sand the wrinkles out and repaint it. Now I know why the clear coat was on sale.
