Re: Sea King 5 h.p.

1951 Made by Gale Products division of OMC. It is a Gale model 5D10. Some, but not all parts are same as Johnson. Lower unit is same as a Johnson TN model. Pretty popular motor. Has a neutral clutch and 360 degree steering for reverse. Water cooled. Should have a healthy spray of water out the slots in the back, about half way down. NEVER take the side plates off the powerhead. They are great running motors when in good condition. Water pump impeller is obsolete, use an impeller for a 5.5hp Evinrude/Johnson by reaming the center hole big enough to fit the drive shaft. Ignition parts are available all over the world, and you probably will need them (coils).

Re: Sea King 5 h.p.

You can get a owners manual/guide for that gem at www.acmeoutboards.com
Those are nice little motors, very reliable. If memory serves, point gap is .020, spark plug gap (J4J, J6J, J8J) is .030, and fuel mix is 16:1, but you can probably run it okay at 24:1 with modern TCW-3 outboard oil. A complete tune-up, coils, points, condensors, should cost less than $75, depending on where you get the parts. Read the thread, Awakening a Sleeping Outboard, on the forums and it'll give you a good baseline on what to do to put it back into service safely and effectively.

Re: Sea King 5 h.p.

Thanks for the great info. This thing honestly looks like it is new although I`m positive it is virgin paint. The decals or what actually looks like paint all look great. One more question. As you are facing the front of the motor where the prime and mixture knob is.On the bottom of the engine left side there is a lever that will move up and down. What is that?I can`t seem to be able to tell what it does. Thanks again.

Re: Sea King 5 h.p.

The lever is the neutral shift lever. Raise it for neutral, lower it to go. Before you even ask, it doesn't do a darn thing unless the motor is running, or at least being cranked over by pulling the starter rope. It will always be in forward gear otherwise.

Re: Sea King 5 h.p.

O.K. I`m back again.Been trying to get this thing running.Have fresh 24:1,If I prime it I`ve got fuel that comes out at the top of prime valve that pushes down.I pulled both plugs and grounded them.I have spark at plugs. It still won`t fire even if I shoot a little in the cylinders.Any suggestions?

Re: Sea King 5 h.p.

Does it have a good blue spark with an easy to here snap.Be sure the plug wires don't short you might try cranking in the dark watch for ignition leaks.
With good spark and a prime either in the plug hole or the carb it should fire.
if not I would suspect the spark. If points are set wrong it will throw off the timing.Should be at .020.
