98 115 Lower unit swap question

I have a 98 115 horse Johnson, earlier this week I got stupid and broke the lower end of the drive shaft where the pinion gear is. With the hopes of getting back on the water quick I found a lower unit from an older 115 that shifts fine and apeared to match up. My motor is a crossflow and this lower unit is from a looper. Everything mated up except the shift rod which is shorter. I thought I could use my shift rod but it still doesn't mate up with the shift lever. I actually have 2 questions...first is the lower unit of a looper compatable with a crossflow if I fabricate a shift rod that will match up or find one somewhere?

Second question if that doesn't work would it work to pull the drive shaft and pinion gear out of the looper lower unit and replace the broken ones from my cross flow lower end?

Any additional input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mike, I had thought the '98 115 was a 60 degree V4 Looper. Did they also make a Crossflow in that year?

It sounds like you need to do a detailed search on some part numbers, and see what you have and what you can do with it. If the driveshaft is the only thing broken, maybe installing a new one os best.

Ok I broght this back to the top for one and only one reason. Chris you have me doubting myself. A major flaw in my charicter is when I am corrected I tend to doubt myself even when I know I am right. Anyway I always thought my outboard was a crossflow. I know it is but when you said the 98 115 was a looper I tried to look it up just to reasure myself. I read somewhere online that SL in the model number designates a 60degree V4 which would make it a looper but I know this is wrong. Somebody please confirm this model number is a crossflow V4 so I can sleep tonight.

Mike, You can look at the block, or even the cowling. The 90 Degree Vee motors are v-shaped, with carbs in the center of the block. The 60 degree vee motors are almost rectangular, since the carbs sit just about on the transfer port covers. Come to think of it, if it has transfer port covers, it is a crossflow.
