Re: So my transom is rotted.

Here is my status...

Found more maggots on the port side of the transom tear down..... see below.

Thanks for the tip on the stringer to transom glass.

Um, has anyone else looked at the picture of the "maggots"...those look like termites to me...

I don't know if really makes any difference...but make sure all of those suckers are dead and gone before putting in new wood...

Re: So my transom is rotted.

Picked up a chisel set (3) from home depot on the way to work this AM. After work, I dawned safety glasses, and respirator and went to town with the chisel. What a breeze it was to remove the rest of the wood with the chisel!

After removing all the wood, tapering the edges with a 7" grinding disc began. I'm guessing tapering the edges will take a few days.

I won't touch the stringers until after the transom is complete to prevent hull distortions.

Pictures:
1 - rotted engine bay starboard stringer that I cut out.

2 - where the rotted stringer cam from

3 - started to grind edges to a taper.

4 - update

5 - tapering edges.

Any suggestions, advise?

You're gonna have to get all the termites out.

Re: So my transom is rotted.

The project is on hold for one month. My wife is having allergic reactions (hives from head to toes). Trying to rule out fiberglass allergy from sanding. May have to scrap the entire project. Will Update as the weeks go by to see if she is getting better.

Thanks for all the help thus far.

Knees are vertical supports between the stringers and the inside of the transom. My 1987 23' Wellcraft (same hull as yours) has six stringers with four knees. Two on the center stringers and one on each of the outside stringers. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow.

Re: So my transom is rotted.

the hull ext thread has pics of kneed stringers.

sorry bout your wife.......

do you know for sure its the boat that is the problem?
however the fiberglass itch is a killer.....

did you wash your clothes in her machines????
if you did...thats some of the battle....use only laundry mat machines, because the glass shards will get in everything.

also i have been using a double suit lately....first i wear long pants and long sleeved shirts. then i wear tyvec coveralls, then over that i wear the full hooded paper painting coveralls.

this is nothing to say about the full face resporator. (manditory)

i hardly itch at all.......but on the nights that i do i dont sleep in the bed....(after cold showers)....i have heard some people use talc powder before they get dressed.

if the boat is in the garage put poly, over the door to the house........ or just move the project to a different garage......(better than scrapping the project and loosing all that money)

hope your wife gets better.

cheers

Update on the wife. No hives for 2 days now. I haven't touched the boat in 2 days ether. I'll probably wait a month before deciding to trash the boat but may that much time is not needed considering she is already better.

Anyhow, going out to the IC to fish with my 8 year hold this am. C ya!!!
