Hiya,

A few weeks ago I bought a new 25 hp 4 stroke EFI merc... Today I got a letter from mercury that there's a recall to inspect potentially loose motor mounts. My motor's still in its factory crate in my garage, but sometime in the next couple weeks I'll get it on the back of my aluminum boat so I can take it in for the inspection. Anyone done this? Is it just tighten a couple bolts, or is some real wrenchin' involved?

The plus side is that now at least I know my warranty has been registered.

Can you do me a favor please? Watch them when you take your motor in to be fixed, see if its really the tiller arm that has the issue and not the bolts. Let me know what is going on with your motor. Thanks, SammyJo

yes, I'll keep my eyes open. The recall did specifically mention some bolts and gave a service bulletin number for them to look up. Do you have a problem with your tiller? BTW, yes mine is a tiller too.

Re: new 25 hp 4-stroke EFI recall

I checked with the manufacturer, Tohatsu, and they said there is no known problem that they are aware of on this model nor have there been any cases of loose motor mounts reported to them. Any chance you could email a copy of the letter to us or fax it?

Thanks,

Elvin

did you get this recall notice that I've mentioned? I think yours would be in the same batch as mine (?). Does your motor have the shift on the twist grip? Or a shift lever at the base of the tiller? Mine's in the twist grip, and that was the major (or only?) change from the model before if I understand correctly. I don't know if there's a place on-line to check... Maybe you could call mercury directly to verify that your name/address has been correctly entered in their warranty/recall database.

Hi BF., yes mine does have the handle shifter and no I did not recieve any recall notice. Although I am not have any trouble with my motor.....im not impressed with the handle shifting. I find when shifting , its not as smooth as i had hoped.

sorry, I didn't follow... does yours have a separate shift lever, or does it just shift by twisting the grip?

Sorry BF, it is a shift grip. Throttle control and gear shift is all in one.

yup... identical to mine... aside from lack of smoothness shifting, are you happy with yours? Idles smooth and is quiet?

Re: new 25 hp 4-stroke EFI recall

BF, it has so far been a great motor!! Im a duck hunter in Canada and had it out in cold weather mornings. Starts on the third pull every time. Very easy on fuel....could not believe the difference compared to a 2 stroke. I do alot of fishing in the summer and can troll all day if i wanted and have a conversation easily.....super quiet. I am very please with the choice and do all my own maintenance. The only thing i could not understand is there is no oil drain plug on my motor. My manual shows one but none on my motor. I bought a transfer pump to pull out the old oil but no big deal overall.

funny about the lack of oil drain. Yes I've seen the ref to it in the manual too. I don't know yet if my motor is also lacking it. Hopefully I'll get it mounted on the boat later today.

What size jon boat is it on? Also what pitch of prop are you running, and do you think that pitch is correct? I have an 11" pitch on mine on a 16' aluminum utility boat. Should be close I hope.

I'm in Canada too... and my recall notice came from Mercury Canada in Ont. If I were you, I'd call there and ask whether your warranty has been registered. I bought mine from a dealer in the US, but before I closed the deal, I called Mercury in Ont to confirm that there wouldn't be any issues with the warranty. The lady I spoke to was very nice and confirmed that there were no prob's registering the warranty here... except that Merc USA had a promo where they were giving 2 extra years of warranty. I only get the 3 years, not 5.

It is possible that the dealer already did this recall on your motor before you got it, in which case the notice might not be issued. (?)

nice looking rig... the boat is comparable to mine size and weight wise. I'd be curious about what pitch your prop is... Was it the dealer who picked the pitch for you? Have you ever put a tach on it so see what your WOT rpm's are? I'm hoping to get some kind of portable tach to make sure I'm setup OK.

Re: new 25 hp 4-stroke EFI recall

Thanks BF, it is a good boat and motor match for my purposes. I can get 48 -50 kph with a handheld GPS with just me in the boat . lots of room for all my gear. I did get the info on the prop for you, it is 9 1\4 x 12 1\2 pitch, three blade alum. Its called Black Max. Part # 48-896900A40. When you get your boat rigged post a pic on the thread sometime.......

BF, forgot to ask you for specific info on recall notice so when I speak with Mercury Canada I can refer to that notice. Thx again for your help.

Re: new 25 hp 4-stroke EFI recall

The oil drain is on the starboard side of the motor leg. There is a plastic shroud covering it. Just remove the shroud and you will see it. The "recall" is something of a joke along the line of "Hot coffee can burn you". Basically there is no problem as such. A few consumers reported to Mercury, that after several years of use, that their engine seemed to shake more than it had originally. The culprit was/is loose nuts on a motor mount. You can check them yourself and tighten them if necessary(you are supposed to go over your engine once a year as preventive maintenance and tighten anything that is loose anyway) or you can run it to your local Mercury dealer and have them do it. It's a five minute deal and is a preventive measure rather than an actual defect. I would certainly check mine just to be safe. Supposedly there were only a few that were not tightened correctly, so chances are that your individual engine will be fine.
