tilt moves too fast!

Okay got my tilt motor today and got it installed. Took all of 15 mins. to my delight. Couple questions though. I re-used my old gasket but during removal some of it ripped. One side of the ear ripped off (around bolt flange) and another small piece around the other flange. Still plenty of gasket around the shaft of motor. Should be okay right?Actually it still had the full circumfrence minus the flange ears. Question two is.. It is super fast coming up but it is also super fast going down, almost freewheels. Is this a sign the clutch dog is going out or do I need to just tap the switch on the way down?

Forgot to mention it is a 1980 Stringer 400 drive.

I used to just tap mine a couple of times on the way down otherwise I was sure it was going right through the transom when it hit!

It is normal that they move very fast downward. Like the previous poster said, go down in short bursts of the down switch.

You definitely do not want to just hold the toggle down til she slams. Earlier units would blow the worm gear right out of the clutch housing. Yes indeed, shoot the whole thing right out into the briney deep. Yours probably has the do-dad to keep the end cap from being blown out but still go easy on the down toggle.

As for the gasket on the tilt motor, the only thing it really does is to insure that any water and oil coming up thru the drive shaft passage goes straight into the tilt motor. I always put an oring around the motor shaft and cut a channel in the gasket, straight down, to allow any moisture to escape before being forced into the tilt motor.

I expect you tried it out of the water? It will slow down a bit in water because of the prop. But still go gently on the down.

If you're concerned about the gasket, pick up a tube of Permatex gasket silicone and apply a bead at the damaged areas, then tighten.
