Two more questions does anyone know what the fuel mixture ratio would be and are service manuals available anywhere ?
Again Thanks a Million!

Re: What do I have? Evinrude Fleetwin?

Evinrude reccomends 1958 and older to use 20:1, although many on here advise 24:1. That is 24 parts 87 or 89 octane fuel to 1 part TCW3 oil. I am not familiar with the vintage outboard, so will let others answer that.

Check www.ebay.com or www.outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint. I would reccomend a factory OEM Service manual as opposed to Clymer or Seloc.

7518 is the model number. Nice motor. The first outboard I ever completely rebuilt was a 1955 Fleetwin. 24:1. 87 octane gas to TC-W3 outboard oil.

When you are ready to service it post back. There are some things you need to know. First thing is that the coils are almost always bad. I will post a photo of bad coils. Second is that you need to replace the impeller, which requires that you remove the powerhead (easy). There are a couple seals that need to be replaced when you do it, but we'll cross that bridge when you get to it. Doesn't hurt to do a compression check. Compression as low as 60 psi is ok, but something in the 80's is better.

Re: What do I have? Evinrude Fleetwin?

I am a total newbie when it come to any type of outboard boat motors so thanks to everyone for the help and info.
All I know is I purchased a small fishing boat and it came with an electric trolling motor and the Fleetwin 7.5. the fellow I bought it from said the motor had not been started for a long time and Im pretty sure he was being honest because it was not on the boat but was inside his barn all hidden and covered with "tell tail" dust and dirt he had the Cruise a Day Jr fuel tank so he mixed up a small amount of oil/fuel pumped up the tank gave the motor two or three pulls and she fired up ran about 5-10 second and he shut it off and I was sold.I got it all home where it sat for the next month or so.
Saturday I put it down in a plastic trash can with water(i have read not to do this),pulled the choke gave it 3 or 4 pulls and it fired to life but it is smoking a little which I understand what my concern is there was what IMO was alot of oil floating in the trash can after about 10 minutes of idling.

Any ideas? Sorry if Im rambling on.:D

Nothing wrong with using a trash can as long as you get the lower unit deep enough.

It will smoke quite a bit. Using synthetic oil will greatly reduce the smoke and oily crap in the water. Still check those coils. It may still run great in a barrel, but not on a boat if the coils are bad. Also, replace the impeller. Its only about $20 or so and needs to be replaced.

I will check around for an impeller even though I dont know what the heck it is:D
I see the pic of the coils you posted what determines if they are bad is it a visual thing or do I need to test for voltage?

You can check for voltage, but basically if they are cracked, discoloured or sweaty they are bad.

The impeller is the heart of the water pump. It is a rubber star shaped piece that needs to be changed occassionally. I won't tell you how often I do mine, but most will tell you every two years. Talking with techs and forum members it seems pretty standard to change it every 1-5 years.

I don't have the parts manual for your motor, but I do have one for a 1956, which is very similar. PM me your email and I'll send you a copy.

Re: What do I have? Evinrude Fleetwin?

Hello again fellas! Got a quick update and a couple more questions.
First off I drained the lower units gear oil and replace it with fresh I put back in about a quart. Anyone know the capacity?
I bought two new spark plugs does anyone know what they should be gapped to?
I went to check the coils so I removed the top I believe its called the starter housing but I wasnt sure how to remove flywheel and cover assembly ,is it pressed on or is it only held on with the nut on top?
Even though I didnt remove the flywheel I could see what I think is the coil but it doesnt look like the one wbeaton posted this one has a hard plastic case around it does this sound reasonable or am I looking at the wrong thing? Should I just go ahead and order new ones?
Well of coarse I couldnt wait to test it out and I have a creek very close so I put it in the water the motor fired up fine, idled good, ran ok but missed and skipped a little which may be due to my poor low and high speed adjustments.

What would be your guess as to the top speed of this motor when put on a 14' vbottom with two adult men?
I didnt have my GPS but I guess it ran about 4-5 mph.

Next on the list replace the impeller.:)

The plugs should be .030". 4-5 mph sounds way to slow to me. You might only be running on one cylinder. When it is idling, unplug one spark plug wire (with a rag) and see if the rpm's drop half or so, then replace it and try the other one. The rpm's should drop around the same for both. If one makes no difference then that spark is not firing and it's a high chance it's the coil.

when you say you can see the coil with the starter off are you looking through the peep hole on top of the flywheel? And if you want to pull the flywheel off you need to remove the 1 big bolt and use a 3 prong gear puller to pull it off.

Yes Im looking down thru the peep hole. I just wasnt sure if I was looking at the coil because it looked different than the pic posted, I didnt pull the flywheel because I had a hunch it needed to be pulled off. Ill pull the plugs as you suggested it will likely have to wait untill Sat or Sunday but sounds from what everyone has been posting that Im just going to go ahead and order a new coil when I order the impeller.

ROTFL..."with a rag"..... I know nothing about small engines but I do own an work on some hotrods so I know all to well that the spark will reach out and bite you!
Thanks,

If you're gonna change one coil, you should change both as usually they are of the same vintage, it's just that one goes first...
