Thought I would share this, might help someone. First time the boat is on a trailer in 3 years so I took the oppertunity to replace the water pump impeller. Rebuilding kit only cost $97.15 plus tax so maby I will try to do it ever 18 months. Good kit, they even give you 4 new bolts, a new woodruff key and 2 new locator dowls which I had no need for.
Things started off smoothe until I removed the pump housing and trouble started. Next thing that has to be removed is a steel collar pressed into a split plastic bushing. Nothing else can come off until these pieces come off. It spins but will not slide up the shaft. Wound up cutting and breaking off the impeller so I could get behind it, still no help! Had to do surgery and make a big notch in the collar with a cutting wheel so I could break it off. Had already looked thru the new parts and found that they were not included in the kit but had no choice! Bottom line is another trip to the parts dept where the attendant knew just what I needed right off and had a few in stock.
Could have been a fluke but I am not sure. Leg is on an F115 which I am sure is on other engines. P/N is 61A-45527-00 for only $5.83 and 61A-45538-00, only $3.16. Yamaha missed an oppertunity to include these parts and charge an extra $20 !! While you are there be sure to pick up an oil filter for your 4 stroke for only $14.20 and replace your thermostat while the price is right, only $46.31. This is my 3rd. YAMAHA and last for a variety of reasons.
Of cource I could have traided it in on a new 90 MERC 2 stroke while the boat was in for repairs. New merc was $7600 plus controls, instrumts, harness, with a trade in offer of $4300 for my high time, 127 hrs., 3 yr old F-115. Looking back I should have jumped at it as I only have 11K+ tied up in the YAMAHA! Another plus is that I would not have to use YAMAHA RING FREE at only $16.94 for all of 12 ozs. Thats the stuff you have to use in your precision, high performance engine to avoid changing the plugs every 125 hrs. at only $12.05 a pop. To bad they dont tell you this in there shinny brocures, even in small print. Can you imagine TOYOTA or MAZDA suggesting that when they sold you a car?
Sorry, guess I went off the deep end. Think I will grab my morning beer and find a tree to cut down for earth day. Missed it yesterday, changing that pump. regards FRED

Thanks for the post and the info Fred.
So your F115 is an '05?
I have an '01 that came with the boat I bought 6 months ago.
I'm getting ready to do the water pump myself so I appreciate your insight.

yeah that collar on the driveshaft is always a hassle. sometimes you can carefully pry them off and re-use, but often they are so stuck that you have to cut or at least damage them to get em off.

:D I just got my water pump kit for the C150, luckily the Yami dealer forwarned me of the 2 ring thingy's, and said " Here " you'll need these too.
Same with the thermostats, oh you'll want these gaskets too which are seperate

Well, lets not drag Yamaha too far under the bus. They have been just about the most reliable motors for the last 20+ years, although Merc's and others have come a long way just as American autos have. I think you will find these types of issues throughout the industry. For some quick anecdotal evidence, look at numbers of service related posts on this web forum for Yamaha/Suzuki compared to Mercury/Mariner (3 times more) & Johnson/Evinrude (6 times more). I would venture to say there at least as many Yammi's in service if not more than Mercury/Mariner and Johnson/Evinrude.

You trade in a F115 for a carbed 2-stroke? Thats a first.

Do your Merc shop a big favor and don't use Ring Free or Mercs equivilant Quikleen. Carbon is a product of combustion and it doesn't know if you engine is a Merc, Yamaha or Briggs and Stratton.

Re: Heads up on YAMAHA water pump

Sorry I might have given out the wrong impression. I have a 50 MERC 2 stroke which I use SEA FOAM in, 1 oz. per gallon , and cant complain, most reliable engine I have had inspite of it being submerged for 24 hrs. in the surf, sand and shells. Nature of the beast of a 2 stroke is that you are running rich, for cooling and mixing oil for lubrication. You can expect carbon buildup.
My issue is the F115 built up carbon to the point of not running after 127 HRS. Its a 4 stroke, just like all those cars and trucks driving down the road. Maby I expected to much. My 97, 4 cyl ford ranger has 110.000 miles on it and I dont even know where the plugs are on the thing. However I am sure others have had problems with whatever unit they have hanging on the transom. And yea, I would go back to a carburated 2 stroke if I could. regards FRED

Bonehead

I have at least 5 posts containing step by step bolt by bolt instructions on how to change the water pump and deal with the lock collar.
my guess is you also failed to pull up on the shaft while seating the collar,as per the manual, so your most likly gonna post about a low speed gearcase knock next.
I guess that will be a yamaha problem too.
most carbon issues come from either over propping or to much low speed operation, its difficult to make an engine that can run all day at 6000 and idle all day.
I wonder how many hours that ranger has running high gear,up hill and neglected half the time?
I am dealing with an F5o now that the owner cant say what it ever turned, he says I never ran it WOT, ok, now I had to run it up on the test wheel. turned up ok there, its been over propped since new in 02.
I guess thats a yamaha problem too.
its sad that some Yamaha dealerships are rather **** poor, however I can name a few Ford dealerships that are total crap :).
but overall yamaha makes a very solid product and if the dealership is worth a fart everything is ok.
however I guess finding a good dealership is like finding a good divorce attorney, you never know until after its done.

Re: Heads up on YAMAHA water pump

Call me a BONEHEAD??? Hey, I will drive by your house, I know where you live. Next time you go to S. AMERICA let me know and I will have your luggage sent to TURKEY. BONEHEAD !!
Changed the pump as per instructions on page 6-6 of the book. Will be another 90 deg. day with a high tide around 3 so I expect to be very happy. Hoping I will not have to use a trailer for another 3 yrs. Should be able to tell if it was a carbon build up problem real fast. Am not bad mouthing the dealer, just got turned off by all the extras they wanted to sell me when I walked in the door. As for lugging the engine, that is my fault. Boat rental people who have 8 of the same boat told me to hang a 90. Mister wise *** know it all opted for the 115 with the boat rated for 140. Motor will spin up to 6K but with 2 people and beer plus a full tank of gas, anything over 4200 is just to much. Thats why I would like a 90. Just occured to me, Maby if I dropped the pitch I could let it spin more.
As for wanting a 2 stroke, weight is the important thing. The F115 is just to heavy. Have manages not to hit the leg yet as I have it trimmed up in bad waters but the transom is taking a beating at idle speeds. At this point I am stuck with what I have. regards. FRED dont call me surely, er bonehead.

Re: Heads up on YAMAHA water pump

CCRISP, I have the manual with the exploded view of the ASSY. but I lack the computer savvy on how to post it. Pretty straight forward. 4 bolts hold the housing, remove the plastic housing and you are looking at the collar/ bushing that I am talking about. Next is a washer, then wavey washer, then another washer. Pull the impeller off and the rest is simple.
I rub some wheel bearing grease on the impeller vanes and rotate the shaft clockwise as I push them in the housing. Book say to pull up on the drive shaft as you press home the collar and split plastic bushing. FRED

Re: Heads up on YAMAHA water pump

great write up....

I did not know about the "pull up on the shaft" when installing the locking ring on the drive shaft.

should I pull down the gear case and do this?

thanks

Re: Heads up on YAMAHA water pump

hahahaahahah.I did forget that Fred knows where I live :)
years ago Yamaha used a spring to hold the shaft up against the bearing, now they use the wave washer and spacers with a lock collar to hold the shaft up and keep the bearing pre-loaded.
wont hurt anything if its missing it will just tend to knock some at low speeds.
annoying but no worries.
Fred, its bad that some dealerships, both auto and marine, simply wish to take your cash.
I have been here in this area over 20 years and your not the only one with my address and phone number.
my neighbor just headed out with his second load of pots today, been working on his rig over 20 years.
but if ya cant get that F115 straightened out, I still will need a vacation soon, gonna get married and may just need a honeymoon :)
