Motor was dying when I throttled past about 1/3 of the range, so I replaced tank, line, primer bulb and connections on both ends of line. Posted last week (called "Fast Idle Problem") because still had the same problem after those fixes. I got one reply that said to clean the carb....so I did that. Thought that would take care of the problem because there was a lot of buildup in the jets. Today it started up first pull, ran well for a minute or so, then died. I noticed that if I choke the engine, it will fire once, then unchoke it and it will start up no problem. If I turn the throttle at all it dies. Could there be a problem with the engine getting too much fuel? Any advice?

Did you check the float hieght? Is the pilot jet (air mixture) screw properly adjusted? [see ref. #14 in the url below] I do not have the number of turns out from lightly seated, but work on 1 -1 1/4 turn.
As you will need to tear down the carb to adjust the float, make sure again that ALL jets/ orifices are cleaned.

Re: 79 Suzuki DT16 Help

float height was good (parallel to the rim of the carb), and on second inspection of the jets, they are spotless. Tried to adjust both set screws on the carb, but nothing will keep it running once you turn the throttle. Where to look next?

Re: 79 Suzuki DT16 Help

No dice....problems getting engine running....problems keeping engine running. Got across the lake once at full speed, engine sounding good, died when I backed off the throttle. When I got it running in neutral, it sounded great. As soon as I put it in gear, 95% of the time it would die right away. Is it possible that there is something wrong with the throttle linkage? Anyone with any advice?

Have you rebuilt the fuel pump. Might be the problem if you haven't.
There are a few things that can cause the problem.
Dirt in the fuel. Bad fuel. Old plugs. Bad connections in the plug wires and a few other more obscure things.
