Re: tach crapped out??

If tachometer goes to zero and then refuses to track RPM it may indicate the voltage rectifier is not operating properly (even though the rectifier may be
partially charging the battery). Are you able to test the rectifier? If not post back and we can guide you through it.

Re: tach crapped out??

I will be watching this thread, mine just did that exact thing, I watched it stop working, it is wired directly to the ignition so I know it isn't a wiring problem.
Hightrim, go ahead and post how to test that if you would and remember I am electronically retarded, I have a test meter, just need to know how to use it and on what.
I think I am over propped but can't tell without a tach that works correctly.
Last time it "worked" I got to 4900rpm with a 50 Evinrude on a 16' v hull ,28MPH GPS, with the speed I am getting I think the tach is reading wrong.

not sure how to test it, im sure my old man does, so ill have him take a peek at it soon, but it still does partially charge the battery, or least seems to be from what my fish finder gps says

Re: tach crapped out??

Just checked iboats store, think I will get one anyhow, I have already replaced the CDI and coils so the rectiifer is about the only electrical thing I haven't replaced, being 27 years old I think it is probly do for a fresh part anyhow.
I will use some of my "free gift" from the government and do my part to stimulate the economy.

Re: tach crapped out??

Check the FAQ's for Joe Reeves threads. He will guide you on the testing of your rectifier. It will still partially charge, even if shot. The following will be of some interest to you. Good luck.

Check Ebay for a used rectifier. I did and got one for $15.00. Fixed by charging and tach problems
