Hello..I am new to this site. Any help would be greatly appreciated.So..
I am looking to purchase a used outboard for a tin fishing boat..
I got a call from a fellow who has a Merc. Classic 50, He is not sure of the year, he thinks 1998 to 1990. He says it's a 4 cyl.with power trim/tilt. I am not that familiar with Merc's. Can anyone tell me what the H.P. rating on this motor is and what I should be aware of with this particular engine.
I am comfortable with the mechanics having re-built a couple of sports cars in the past and have maintained several of my own outboards.
He also mentioned that he has not been using the oil reservoir but instead has been running the engine using a pre-mix in the tank. He claims that sometimes the oil pump can fail so as a safe guard has been adding oil to the gas.
I would be doing a compression check and looking at the obvious..prop shaft wobble, linkage shifting etc. and will change the impeller. He claims the engine has performed fine for him and is selling because of an upgrade(larger motor).
I have seen and worked on some of the Mercs built in the late 90's /early 2000 and have noticed a problem with low grade stainless in some of their components.
Is this engine worth persuing and again..any known issues. Thanks in advance to anyone who will take the time to reply.Doug..
P.S. If I decide to purchase this motor.(asking price of $1600.00 with controls). Is there anyone who can tell me if a Tiller Steering kit is available as I would rather not put a helm into the boat??

with out serial number or year, hard to tell, tiller arms for the larger motors are really hard to come by. the 4 cylinder 50 is what all the inline mercs were based on. they are super motors. the price really depends on the year,

i just paid $500 for an 1988 50hp rude.
