I have a 1955 Evinrude Lightwin that dies when I throttle up to high speed. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carb and cleaned the metallic in-tank filter. The motor starts right up and runs very smooth. However, when I throttle up it dies like I shut it off. It will start again if I choke it. I can also keep it from shutting off if I pull the choke out, but as soon as I push the choke in it does again. It seems to me like when I demand more fuel it starves out. Do I need to get at the carb again? Thanks.

Can we assume you have tried simply turning the high speed knob a bit toward rich? You are running too lean, thus the need to choke it. However, it could be the tank filter causing your grief. Once those things are plugged up, they are nearly impossible to clean. You are supposed to replace it rather than clean it. That was then, this is now and they are very $$expensive. I suggest melting it out of the fitting and solder in a piece of brass filter screen instead.

I fiddled with the high speed rich/lean knob and she still died. I removed the in-tank metal filter that I had cleaned and installed a new one. VOLA! She revves up to full throttle! Thanks for that suggestion.:D

Dang, I didn't reply in time. I was going to say that '3Hp' and 'High Speed' in the same sentence was an oxymoron! :)
