Bearing seal headaches

This is on a 1985 era trailer, ShoreLandr. I replaced the bearings and seals two yrs. ago, using specifications we could piece together from the old parts which were so rusty and shot it was hard to determine. New Seal at that time went in too easy I thought. Now on inspection the races and bearings are damaged, water intrusion. So seal is definitely too loose.

I got the numbers for the parts from ShoreLandr, but since the serial no. on the trailer cannot be found, they estimated what the part numbers would be on that old of a trailer. Got those parts from a local bearing supplier. But again the seal is too loose.

What do I do? The bearings are the right sizes for this spindle but it is the seal that is causing the headaches. Part nos. are "supposed" to be: Timkens LM 67048/11949 bearings and races; CR seal 14977

Re: Bearing seal headaches

can you take the whole hub assembly to your supplier and have them get a seal to fit? I've had the same problems in the past, and was almost always able to get the right part if I took the hub with me. I also would use a micrometer to measure the spindle if needed.

If they only used 2 seals, then mine must be the other one!
I will take the hub to the bearing supplier and let him mic it...we know the inner diameter is fine, its the outer diameter that is giving me fits.

Thanks,
Joe

How loose is it in the hub? These are the specs for the seal you have CR #14977 2.328 .500 The next bigger seal OD I see is CR #14978 2.372 .375. I underlined the OD in the specs. Both seals are for a 1.5" ID, the other number is the thickness of the seal.

Its loose enough that I could push it in by hand without driving it in, and when I loaded the bearings and handtightened the castle nut I checked the rear of the hub and the seal was bulging out of the hub from only that much pressure of the grease! the supplier gave me a Federal Mogul #203013 as the replacement for the CR 14977.

Re: Bearing seal headaches

My book shows that as the right seal to match the 14977 CR. Do you have a 3/4 X 1 1/4 spindle, with a 1 1/2 seal surface?

Yes 3/4x 1 1/4 spindle with a 1.50 seal surface. Yet that seal #203013 is too small in O.D. doesn't make any sense.

Every manufacturer has an employee that has his mind on the "big weekend" just before the afternoon break on a Friday, just before the strike on the day that his wife bitched him out when his kid said that he no longer loved him.

Mike the hub and if it is not in specification then replace it.

You might be surprised at the manufacturing tolerance as applied by employees as compared to the OEM specs!

Re: Bearing seal headaches

The hub seems to be the problem...excessive wear on the inner bearing side. I used the seal recommended by the manufacturer but put some RTV blue gasket sealant on it hoping it would form a better seal on the hub bore. The other side fit fine, good snug fit. I will pull them at the end of the season and if water did intrude will replace that hub. Thanks to all who replied!

Re: Bearing seal headaches

Glad you got it figured out, thanks for letting us know the outcome of your problem. I hope I don't have that kinda problem when I put new bearings/seals in my trailer, it uses the same bearings and seals that yours does.
Goodluck,
Brian
