oil pressure?

I took the boat out yesterday and noticed that my oil pressure on the gauge was close to 80psi. This seems high to me. When i was going slow or idle it would stay between 40-50psi. When i would half throttle to full throttle it was around 80psi and that's as far as the gauge goes. There is no water in the oil and i just changed the oil with mercruiser 25w40. It is a 4.3lx merc. Any suggestions? After noticing it i did not really want to run the boat past half throttle just in case.

Yes, it was after it warmed up. It stayed around 40-50psi when ideling or going slow and when i would get over around 2500rpm it would be between 70-80psi. I checked the dipstick and i am a little over the full mark on dipstick. Could putting a little to much oil in it when i changed the oil do this? The boat ran great but i was a little leary of running it open throttle or half way.

Re: oil pressure?

Was the oil pressure ok BEFORE you changed the oil and filter?
I would install a mechanical gauge to see what the pressure actually is. If it is still high, it could be your new filter.

I really don't know what the pressure was because this was the first time having boat on the water. You might be right about the filter. I changed the oil but could not get the old filter off. I broke my filter wrench and nobody around me had one that i needed. I know that i should have replaced the filter when putting new oil in it but we were going to the lake the next morning and i thought it would be ok to change it at a later date when i could get the right tool to get it off. It has a fram filter on it and i went and bought a mercruiser filter to replace it. I guess i will start with getting the old filter off and putting the new one on and see if that helps. Should i be able to tell correct pressure with running it on muffs in the drive way? Pressure is fine when it is ideling but i'm not sure if i should put it in gear and get rpm's up high enough with muffs on it.

Yes you can test it on the muffs, no need to be in gear either.....;)
