my 51 sea king was running and it shifted into gear even though the lever was in nuetral, how can I tell if the cable broke? this is a 5 hp. now it is stuck in gear, any help????

If the cable isn't obviously broken where it attaches to the lever, it may have come loose in the lower unit, or broken down there. You can pull the lower unit and check...fix it or replace the cable. Then again, do you really need neutral? Direct drive outboards were all the rage up until the early 50's...just don't stand up in the stern when you're starting it or you could get an unexpected bath.

Broken cable or broken clutch spring. Or the cable slipped in the clamp at the shift lever. If it is a broken clutch spring I suggest you not leave the broken piece floating around in there. You do not want it going between the gear teeth.
