Hi.
I am trying to find out the exact model and year of a 30hp johnson i picket up recently. Asked the local marina but they pointed me to a plate which is actually not there (on the transom clamp). I looked all around the outboard and the block and the only numbers that i could find are :
on the outside (near the transom clamp): "334526" and under it a "D2" or "02" or "O2", kind of hard to discern what it is.
on the block itself, near the bracket holding the throttle rod: "13JN1" and under it "326713", some weired symbol and "2".
on a shiny plug (anti freeze feature???) "R8204847".
If any of you can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You.

Re: Jonson 30hp identification

Welcome to iboats.

Would this outboard be manufactured pre 1980 ? If so, it is a 1956. Model number RD-18 or RDE-18.) I believe that is the only year Johnson made the 30 pre 80.

If it is 1980 to present, we need a model number, will look something like J30ELCSA (1980 30 hp Johnson)

Were would i find that model number?
I looked all over and could not find the plaque with the model number is there a specific place I should look?
The motor is an 80s from what i can tell and what the seller told me.
It starts right up and idles nice. I ran it in a bucket for a couple of min but turned it off as the water level was at the intake level.
Since I did not see any water coming out of the "pee hole" i would like to change the water pump (or just the impeller) and the lower unit lube.
I am just trying to figure out which parts do i order and what kind of lube, if they do not differ from year to year please let me know as it does not make any difference to me what year the motor is as long as it runs.
Any comments or input would be appreciated.
Thank You.
Nick.

"on a shiny plug (anti freeze feature???) "R8204847".

That is the serial number. The only place the model # is given is on that plate that's missing. I don't know if your Johnson dealer has a serial number list or not. Other than that, the only way to ID it is by the decals. Those other numbers are only casting numbers, many of which are used for years.

called bombardier today. they are impressive.
based on the serial number the engine is a 1989 J30ELCE.
The thing is I can't find it on the johnson parts site.

Got it.
Than You VERY much.
I've seen on some websites that the waterpump kit / impeler is the same for the 30hp engines in between 1986 and 1994. Is it safe to go with that assumption and get it or am i better off paying extra and getting it from the Johnson website?

Not a problem. So essentially what you are asking is if it is ok to use an aftermarket waterpump kit as opposed to the OEM. Many on here do, I personally have never used one so cannot comment. They sell the Sierra brand right here on iboats.

Re: Jonson 30hp identification

I'm trying to get as much info as I can on the engine so I can figure out what's it capable of, what can I expect to get from it usage wise and what kind of service expenses should I expect.
I come from the sailing world and the most I've ever used an engine before was for 15 min to get some extra push against the current while entering the harbor.
I do have some mechanical experience (rebuilding 4 cycle carburated engines and some experience with fuel injected ones as well).
This engine is going on a Quicksilver 430 inflatable and tue to the reduces space in the boat and intended use I would like to make sure that it is RELIABLE before I get it on the water.
If anybody could help me figure out how much GPH it's going to burn and what kind of speed should I expect I'd appreciate the input as well.
The thing with the parts is that my local Johnson dealer looks up parts by model nr. / year, same with the Johnson website or Siera website, that while some other websites list the parts as being compatible with xxxx to yyyy year range; I was kind of confused by that, ....
Thank You guys.
Regards.
Nick.
P.S. Picked up a trailer yesterday, the glue is arriving tuesday, the water pump on Thursday - I'll have a couple of busy weekends - will let you know how it went once I have it floating.
