recently ran merc 5.0 dry for about 30 seconds while pulling out of ramp---was in a hurry with lightning in area--how long can this motor run dry before damage to engine?

Ayuh,......

I wouldn't worry so much about the Motor,...
But,....
The waterpump Impeller probably took a 'ell of a Beating......

Re: merc 5.0 dry run

I ran my 5.8L dry for about 15 mins as I thought the hose was on with no issues on the motor...however the next season my impeller was whing like a baby and needed replacing. Yet another $100+ lesson learned.

and I thought 30 sec would burn up the engine!--most likely another $100+ lesson as well

If the impeller vanes were completely dry, like from sitting in winter storage ,maybe 10 seconds and it`s destroyed..It did get stressed so I would atleast replace the impeller and upper cap.

Re: merc 5.0 dry run

this impeller was used a half season. it got run dry once for 10-15 sec. was in my driveway and i didn't turn on the water..... hooked up but not on, geez. anyways, was a dry run, probably sitting for a few days prior too being forgetfull, then run.

has slight curl to blades, inside ea. blade has signs of cracking starting to form...

i'd watch my temp gage with yer 30 sec. run. maybe ya'll be lucky since ya'd just pulled it out of the drink..... any signs of overheat, i'd go replace it.... overheats are just a bad thing to have happen..... ruins more than just the impeller.......

Re: merc 5.0 dry run

I ran mine once, probably 45 seconds b4 I realised that I had not turned the hose back on. I had been running the engine to find a squeal and had turned the motor and water off several times.

I thought for sure I had cooked the impeller but upon removal, it was just fine. The saving grace was that it had been recently wetted. I'd bet you would be good to go just having pulled the boat out of the water.
