i recently put a new prop on,i now realize that the engine was in gear when i did this. now when i try to start the boat it wont go into neutral or reverse just forward .

Installing a new prop should have no affect on shifting from neutral to forward or reverse. The reason you can't shift properly is because you hit something and damaged the lower unit in addition to the prop -- not because you changed the prop.
