Hi,
Im involved in the fixing up of a fletcher gts 18. The engine is a mercruiser 4.3 v6. the bat was bought from auction so no idea what state the engine is in. we need to get the boat running ideally before summer so need to know what needs to be done. the engine has had the plug leads cut on one side for some reason and the dip stick was laying on the top of the engine when it was bought. the boat was apparently sunk for a few days so no idea how bad the engine is going to be. where do we start?

If the boat was really sunk its 99% that the engine is junk.
First thing would be pull the spark plugs and see if it will turn by hand.If water runs out of the cylinders its probably junk.

Ayuh,.......

If you've gotta ask That question,...........
You probably otta Start by Calling a Mechanic......

Start with the Basics,.....
Will the motor rotate at All,..?? Are the Hard Parts Serviceable,..??
Then you need a Working Igntion System,.....
And,.....
A Working Induction/ Fuel System,.........
A Cooling System,.....
An Electrical System,.....

Then Turn the Key.......

Welcome to iboats.

I'd like to add to bondo's list a couple of quick items, since we don't know your experience/comfort level.

RUN THE BLOWER before you even touch the key.

Don't forget about the safety lanyard, it grounds out the ignition.

engine is fine, not siezed. turns over fine on starter motor, all new sparks and ht leads. getting a spark. but thinking fuel pump may be knackered. we put a bit of fuel into the carb and turned it over by jumping it from a land rover as the battery is dead. after a while it fired about 3 or 4 times then stopped. starter motor now just whines really loud and doesnt turn engine over. what could have happened here? stripped the starter gears?

Mercruiser 4.3 engines are equipped with the serpentine belt drive system and have the alternator located high on the STBD side of the engine. This kit comes complete with thermostat, brackets, hoses, and instructions.

Could just be a bad bendix. More than likely, if this was the same starter that was sunk, it's trashed. You'll probably have to rebuild it, or replace it.

You'll have to pull the starter to see if the starter or flywheel are missing teeth If all the teeth are there, than rebuild or replace the starter.

Don't run the starter for long periods of time while trying to start the engine either. You'll burn it up. It's tempting, but just give it bursts of a few seconds, and allow plenty of time between tries, to allow the starter to cool back down.

It's probably not the fuel pump that's having problems (though it may be), I'd look at the carb first. It proably needs a rebuild, or at the very least, a good cleaning, after spending some time in the drink... Either way, now's the perfect time to go ahead and give it a rebuild, so you can start out with a nice fresh carb, no?

Also, are you using fresh gas out of a gas can? It's likely that the gas that's in it is full of water as well. Even if it's not, it's probably gone bad. You could also have a plugged anti-siphon valve, etc...

Try running it directly out of a gas can, and see if it runs that way.
