I have a 1963 ,40 horse johnson out board that I can't get the fly wheel off of. Is there some trade secret out there.I have used 2 kinds of wheel pullers with no luck at all.

Re: fly wheel stuck

Welcome to iboats Roy.

We're assuming you are using a proper puller, as pictured here.

She will 'pop' off. Tapping the center bolt with a rubber mallet may help it along, or leaving the tension on overnight. DO NOT whack the flywheel or pull on its outer edges. Be sure to torque it on reinstallation and ensure the tapers are clean and dry. I seem to remember a service bulletin about the torque values on that motor getting raised to 100-105 ft/lbs, but am not absolutely certain. Others will verify that.

It ain't stuck. But they are indeed a bear to get off. You must use a puller that uses the 3 bolt holes near the center, along with Grade-8 hardened bolts. Then give it heck. If it doesn't pop off, give it more heck. when you get it extremely tight and it still doesn't pop off, lift gently on the flywheel (enough to take the weight off) and give the center puller bolt a whack. It WILL come off if you are mean enough.

Yes, reinstallation torque is 100-105 ft/lbs. If you ignore this step, kiss the motor goodby.

EDIT: Oh, and screw those Grade-8 bolts in 7/16", no more and no less.

You really need a strap wrench to hold the flywheel while you are tightening down on the pullers' center bolt. PM FR and maybe he will tell you how to make one if you don't have one. Good luck!

That is where the Grade 8 bolts come into play like FR mentioned. They are a necessity. I believe you will need 5/16-24 Fine Grade 8. Getting these is the second step after purchasing the puller.

I used a puller like tashasdaddy posted. After I got the puller as tight as I could. I started to tighten the bolts, one at a time. The third time around it came loose. Just keep in mind, when it dose come loose its going to sound like you broke something.

Real important to have the puller screws even.OMC makes them with a shoulder to guarentee even pull. You might want to count your turns and put them in same amt.Common problem.

Re: fly wheel stuck

In addition to all the excellent ideas above, an impact wrench does wonders. I found that my impact did not have enough torque, so I used a 4' breaker bar to manually load the puller. After hours of frustration, I figured it could not hurt to put the impact back on it. The impact did not tighten it any more, but the rapid hammer effect made it pop right off. Leave the main nut on the crank a few turns to prevent the whole assembly from flying to the floor. And DO find grade 8s. I still have a grade 5 stuck in my basement ceiling to prove this point.
