I have a Maxum 1999 2300 sc, with mercruiser 220 hp motor, alpha one outdrive.
I use quicksilver high performance gear oil in the outdrive.
to save time, I had the marina change the oil. They put regular 90w gear lube in it.
when I drain the gear lube to put quicksilver back in it, is there anything I should do to "flush" the lower unit? can I simply drain the 90w gear lube and replace with the high performance oil? The two oils are not supposed to be mixed, is there a potential for problems?
This was done on saturday, the boat has only been run for 10 minutes with the 90w gear lube, and will need to be run another 10 minutes to get back to the launch ramp.

thanks for you help

Fun..It wont effect anything, drain out the old 90W,leave the drain plug overnight..refill. But i do need to ask why your using HP, its not necessary 90W will work fine,Quicksilver HP is for use in modified high performance outdrives,it not gonna hurt anything to use it,but for your purposes 90W is fine.

Ayuh,......

I Agree,.... It'll run just Fine with the 90W,.....
But,...
If you insist on changing it to the Syn.oil,....
Just Drain it,+ Refill it with Whatever oil you want to use......
The tiny amount of residual oil left will Not hurt a thing....
The oils are completely compatable....

I use Mobil 1, in 75W-90.......

Quicksilver HP is for use in modified high performance outdrives,

The HP gear lube is what is recommended by Mercruiser in ALL of it outdrives, not just modified HP outdrives.

Merc High Performance is also a 75W90 Synthetic gear lube, unlike straight 90W gear lube.

The HP gear lube also has additives that allows water (should a leak develop) to mix with it instead of seperating out like many synthetic gear lubes do.

But I will agree that the straight 90W will not do any damage to the drive.

Don, yea your right,it is recommended my Merc.....but its like using 120 octane in a yugo..its considerably more expensive and for the users purpose...aside from reliving him of more money there's no benefit by using the QS. technically its formulated to not breakdown under extreme heat and friction, and by extreme,im talking offshore racing, not dragging the kiddies in tubes, so, why spend the money if you dont have to.
