Tilt/Trim Woes

Hello,
I am having trouble with my tilt/trim working on my 1987 Evinrude 120. At the end of last
season (september) the tilt and trim stopped working. I stored the boat up over the winter
and brought it out last week to get her ready for another season of skiing with the kids and to deal with the Tilt/Trim problem. When I tried it, it worked fine! I went ahead and tilted it up
and then lowered it back down in order to change the gear oil in the foot. After that, it stopped working again! Any thoughts why it would be intermittent in working? I appreciate any feedback but nearly as much as my kids would. They can't wait to put the boat back in start skiing again!
Thanks,

Welcome to iboats.

Gut feeling is that your fluid level is low. Tilt it to the full out position, top up fluid, cycle 5 to 6 times, bleeding the air, then re fill, etc... until you can no longer fill.

Let us know how you do.

Thanks Chris! When you say tilt to the full out position do you mean allow
the motor to be in the full down position or up? And as I cycle it I keep the drain plug out. Is that right? Thanks in advance for adding a little more info
to help me solve this issue.

what i did, was with the plug in, had another person, push the button, and i lifted the motor to the trailer lock, then topped on the pump, then lowered all the way down, then all the way back up, with me lifting, refill, took several times to get the system full.

When you say, "It stopped working again!", are you actually hearing the pump trying to work? If not, there's an electrical issue and you are chasing the wrong gremlin. I'm assuming, yes, but thought I'd ask for clarification. If the answer is, no, I'd suspect a faulty switch.

Get it to the full out, or up, position and lock it as Tash stated. Remove the fill plug, top up the fluid, re insert the plug, then cycle the motor 5 to 6 times, up and down, up and down, back to the full up or out position. Then again remove the plug, top up the fluid again, reinsert the plug, cycle motor 5times, etc... until you can no longer fill it any more when you are in the full trimmed out, or up, position. When you are cycling it, what you are doing is bleeding the air from the system.

Re: Tilt/Trim Woes

Just an idea, i had the same issues where it would work and then it wouldnt work and I tried doing a lot of things but i finally fixed it with an extremely easy fix after a couple months.....i have 2 relays to my tilt/trim...1 up and 1 down....i replaced both the plugs and since then i have not had any problems with it.
