First off, this is my first motor. I know nothing about small engines/marine engines but learning quickly.

I purchased this for 20 bucks at a garage sale. The lady told me her son said it worked, sure enough i put some gas in and it fired right up! I'm sure it could use a tune up/rebuild kit. However i have no idea what type of engine it is. She said it was a 2hp. It says 'eska 500' on it but every thing else has been spray painted. Please help me out and let me know what type of maintenance i should do before taking it on the water!

Also, i see a tube by the prop i assume is the impeller but no water is coming out of the engine any where while its running? is it clogged or is the tube for some thing else?? I thought water usually shoots out the back in a little stream?

Re: Help me identify this eska.....

If it says 500 on it, it's a 5hp.

Look closely on the cowling and around the transom mount for a model number. With that, we can probably date your outboard. The number will be a four-digit number, possibly with a letter after it. Are there any names near the 500 designation, like Golden Jet or Pathfinder? That could also help.

This one appears to me to use prop wash to push water up the leg to cool the exhaust. I don't see any place on the lower unit for an impeller, but I could be wrong.

A model number would really help, and I'm sure Eska put on one on the outboard somewhere.

With that in hand, there may be sources for some of the parts you need.

Motors prior to 67 have the cooling tube. There is a Golden Jet 500 4hp in 62,
a Blue Jet 500 5hp in64.and a Golden Jet 500 5hp in 66.
There is a 5hp that uses a Clinton 501 power head J12Y plug. The other 5 uses a Tecumseh V51 with a J6J plug. The Tecumseh V51 is a split case motor the Clinton is not.All these motors use the cooling tube.

Re: Help me identify this eska.....

When i get home i'll look for model #'s. I didn't see any though, it has a THICK coat of still wet spraypaint.....

If i can't find model #, is there any thing else to help identify? if i took off the engine cover and got some pic's of the head maybe?

How do i check if that tube by the prop is doing what its suppose to do?

It appears production began in 61 and The models I mentioned started to appear in 62.I don't know if the names matched color but you could see if any remains under the spray job.On further reading it appears the the 4,6,7 hp use the cooling tube and the 5hp has a pump.Cooling intake is just below the antivent plate. My manual seems to indicate the Clinton motor is the 65,66 Blue Jet 500.The Golden Jet of 66 appears to be a Tecumseh power head.

You could check the tube by running it in a barrel.Water should mist out the relief holes in the leg.

Or, you could put a hose on it, with whatever stuff you need to make it fit pretty well and see where the water goes. As long as that tube is open, it will do its job of cooling the exhaust. You just need to see that it is clear of obstructions. Nothing is simpler.

Sorry for the delay, found a metal tag on the engine, looked like a 'dog tag':

T-634-07d
4795135

i could get more pics of engine with cover off if that will help.... Thanks!

OK, with that engine number, it has to be made from 1965-67. That engine number makes it a 5hp.

Re: Help me identify this eska.....

Is there any thing else i could use to identify this? I'd like to get a 'carb kit' or some other rebuilt application.

Also what should i do for a 'tune up'?

-do i need to grease any thing?
-take any thing apart and clean it?
-should i replace spark plug and where do i get one?
-what kind and how much oil to gas (i assume regular 2 stroke, not marine).

I know nothing about engines but point me in the right direction and i'll figure it out. I took the cover off and it looks like a lawnmower engine. I'm sure i can take it apart and get back together pretty easy with out messing it up if i know what to do once its apart. Thanks!!!

Re: Help me identify this eska.....

Have you determined if it is a Tecumseh or Clinton power head.My info indicates the 65,66 Blue Jet may use a Clinton powerhead.Have you tried to see if the old paint is underneath?I would assume the Blue jet was blue.etc etc.Have you checked to see if it is a split case or not?
All Tecumseh use J13Y set at .030.Clinton uses J12J set at .025.
Tecumseh uses a Tecumseh carb.Clinton uses various carbs Tillotson being one.You may find kits at a well established small engine shop.
Clinton has been out of businress since about 1980,Eska about 85 Tecumseh is still kicking.
