Steering Clicks at full left and right when tilted

Hi all! I recently purchased a 2001 150HP Evinrude on a 2001 Glastron GX180. When the boat is out of the water, I have a difficult time at almost any tilt angle to get the steering to "catch" when it is in either full left or full right position. It just clicks and sounds like a gear isn't catching right behind the steering wheel, while the wheel turns round and round. It is better in the water (I suppose because the water helps take some of the weight off) but if the motor is trimmed up while in the water, it does the same thing. I have to lower the motor to get it to catch from the left or right extreme, then I can tilt it back up when approaching the dock or trailer. It seems to be getting worse and I'm wondering if there is a gear that is somewhat easy to replace, or if this is cable related, or if this is maybe just going too far left or right and by adjusting something will do the trick. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks again.

You mentioned a cable, so I assume you don't have hydraulic steering, right? Sounds like your helm (steering gearbox) is shot. Kind of wierd that it happened at full hardover in both directions. Must be something I haven't experienced.

it sound like you cable is binding, when tilted. you may have worn out the gears in the helm, or the cable is going bad. do you have rack or rotary helm?

Under the fiberglass, behind the steering wheel is a long skinny box that both cables go into, and the round unit immediately behind the steering wheel that goes into that long skinny box says Teleflex Rack System on it. Is swapping out that gearbox a somewhat easy fix? Thanks for the quick responses.
