Sea Ray Gel Coat Paste Repair

I bought a bottle of Spectrum Gel Coat Paste Repair (artic white)from a Sea Ray dealer to repair a couple of chips in the transom area and also attempted to fill in a chip on the upper driver's side near the gun whale. The chips on the transom filled in nicely and I sanded them down after letting them cure all night. With the chip on the side of the boat I made a slight groove with a can opener and then filled in with the gel/paste.When I did a little sanding with the 220 grit after applying the paste gel (after waiting 3 hours) I saw the black/darker color coming through.I switched to 300 and 400 grit wet sand but it didn't help.The patched area is really smooth but the white color seems to have disappeared and now I have a glassy black line about 5 inches long. The temps here in Wisconsin now are only the 50's with night's in the high 30"s. Is it temperature related or am I doing something else wrong? Is there a white expoxy paint I could use to paint the area? I have a few small stress cracks on the passenger side as well but am now reluctant to try to do any more until I get some advise.Any advice is appreciated.

thats strange for a color change. Was the patch completly dry before you started sanding or was it a little tacky? If it was it could have been pulling the sand paper color off (if its black). Also I wait untell its above 60 to do any gel coat or fiberglassing. I would suggest sanding it out and trying again mabey first thing in the morning so it gets the heat of the day to dry.

The 220 grit wet water proof sandpaper I am using is actually a rust brown color and the 300 and 400 grit is black. The finish is so glassy smooth with no rough spots but I'm afraid to keep sanding for fear the black streak will grow.

hmm... Im not to sure them can you post a pic or something... Im thinking its something to do with the tempature was it tacky at all?
Was it the same batch as the ones on the transom? If it was something is really weird about your boat haha. I would suggest digging/sanding/grinding out that area and starting from scratch.
Was that patch cleaned before you started if you do it again wipe it down with acetone before you start.

I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. It's crazy, I started with a chip area the size of a pea,after I started sanding the black color appeared and was about two inches long and then I made a V groove with a churchkey about three inches long, cleaned the area with acetone and then filled in with the white colored paste. After I sanded again the black streak had grown to 4-5 inches but it is prefectly level with the surrounding area and smooth as a baby's butt.

This is weird stuff. Was it the same batch as the transom batch?

If it happens again go get some touch up paint because I don't know what going on.

the mix in the gell that you bought is off.....unless there is a different substance in the substraight........

mix the gell repiar better. pour some on a peice of wood and re mix it there.....no way it should turn black.
