Does a guy NOT pull this engine into reverse when dropping the L.U. for W.P. replacement??????
Never touched the shift stub....changed pump out and reinstalled, turned prop-shaft slightly to re-align to powerhead and the darn thing is in FWD gear with shifter in N...
Need some help here boys/Men.

Re: Merc 850

This happened to me when I rebuilt my '75 Merc 850. I pulled off the LU again and I must have accidently bumped the shift cam on the front of the LU while it was off. Investigate the relationship of the throttle and shift arm (in the cowling below the carbs) while in F,N, & R to note the position of the arm. Then do the same with the cam by carefully using a tool to turn it. Once I turned the cam one way, I truned the prop to see which direction that I could NOT turn it to determine if it was in F,N, or R. Once you find F and R on the cam, then set the cam in between those two settings and return your throttle to N. That's how I fixed mine and it took a couple tries, but I eventually got it.

I always put the shifter into neutral. The shift shaft will click into neutral and stay there.

Since your gears are messed up, I recommend you drop the LU and find neutral. Since there are two neutrals, make sure you have the correct one.

BTW - I thought you ran 'rudes?

Re: Merc 850

I am a 'Rude man... the problem is..well I work on others that require BLACK paint on occasion...
For some reason I had it in my head this had to be in reverse....I think my Mercruiser training is complicating what I'm doing without the Manual...I tell everyone else they should have one, and once again, I remind myself why...
Thanks guys.

Ken - BTW MerCruiser Alpha Drives need to be in forward, or the linkage will not disconnect w/o breakage...

I believe both the control and gearcase must be in forward gear when joined together. Rotate shift shaft counterclockwise until you feel resistance, this should be forward on gearcase. Use 11/32 socket to turn shift shaft. Just did this 2 days ago on a 1963 inline 6 Merc 850
